7 day trip planning suggestions

Hello all,

I am extending a 4 day business trip to Helsinki an additional week before spending my final weekend in Amsterdam and heading home. I haven't yet decided where I want to spend the time and thought I would solicit some feedback from the Rick Steves crowd. A little about myself. I am 52, single and traveling by myself. I love history, culture and art so think, palaces, castles, museums. More of a city guy than country. My last big European trip I had 8 weeks and spent 4-5 days in many of the big cities of Western Europe including Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Florence, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin and London. While I loved those cities (especially Vienna..perhaps because I had no expectation of loving it!) I wanted to visit new places. I am thinking of Copenhagen, Hamburg, Salzburg and Munich or? Any feedback is much appreciated!

Cheers,

Roc

Hi,

Depending on what you finally decide in terms of cities, you also have the ferry option. Ferry from Helsinki to Rostock, take the train Rostock to Hamburg, then there's the CNL night train Hamburg to Munich if that's a viable option in adding a day, The drawback is that Copenhagen is left out. You can still add Copenhagen after Hamburg. I've done the CNL Hamburg-Munich route....good, depending on your travel style.

Helsinki immediately brings memories of Tallinn and St. Petersburg. Tallinn's medieval center, tucked into a remote corner, has hardly been touched by the destructive wars that ravaged much of Europe over the centuries. I had a similar experience to yours in Vienna - went back this year for a second visit, since the first was all too brief, and liked it even more. I mention this because, whatever my expectations of St. Petersburg, they were also exceeded. Consider visiting both by ferry from Helsinki. I'd say 2 days in Tallinn, then at least 3 in St. Petersburg. Then fly from Helsinki to Amsterdam.

The places you mention are easy to include on many European itineraries. Take advantage of Helsinki's location.

Naaaaaa, head east where the arts are still central to the culture and not just tourist attractions; Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia for the big cities and Pecs, Gyor, Debrecen, Sibu, Sighisoara, Plovdiv, Nesebar for the smaller cities.

Hello ron.ellington. Of the cities that you mentioned, I recommend going to Copenhagen (from Helsinki). I think being at Copenhagen, two whole days is sufficient time there. Or, in your seven days after Helsinki, travel to Tallin in Estonia (it looks medieval Europe) and Copenhagen in Denmark. I liked the Scandinavian people in Denmark, and people in Estonia like to sing !
