Rome was prepared for the earthquake that was to hit May 11, but it happened in Spain. I hope all travelers are safe, and my thoughts are with those affected. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110511/ap_on_re_eu/eu_spain_earthquake
When we are having the perpetual discussion about carry your passport/lock it in the hotel safe. this reinforces my idea that it is always a good idea to have my passport and money on me at all times.
My wife's cousin was in Christchurch, New Zealand at the time of the recent earthquake. She met some American tourists who had left their passports at their hotel. The hotel collapsed and they had to go to the U.S. embassy in Auckland to get new passports. Of course, they lost all their baggage as well. Carrying your passport might help if your are injured or killed in a collapsed building, as the emergency services could identify you more easily.
