Can anyone suggest a Normandy-based tour company for touring the D-day battlefields and sights?

I would HIGHLY recommend BattleBus Tours!!! Check www.battlebus.fr to get some idea which of their many tours you would prefer.
The tours take a full day (about nine hours) and normally leave from Bayeux at about 08:00 (that's why Bayeux is a good "home base" when touring the area). Guests have to buy their own lunch, but it's not expensive (and if your guide is Dale, you might end up at a very interesting site for lunch!).
I took both the American highlights tour and the Canadian highlights tour, and both were awesome!

We did two days last summer and one day last month with Battlebus. It was the highlight of our trip both times. I cannot say enough good things about them. Read or watch Band of Brothers, and take that tour, along with the American Highlights Tour. You will see and learn about places and events you would never see on your own.

I also recommend the Battle Bus tours. Book early as they book up fast.
