Can I withdraw cash using my Capital One credit card at any ATM in Europe and do I have to have a PIN number?
Thanks for the input. Just looking for an alternative in case the debit card doesn't work when trying to obtain cash.
Yes, you can, but you must have a PIN number. Capital One should have sent you a PIN number when you got the card. If not, you need to call them.
You understand, I hope, that using a credit card (rather than a debit card) to get cash is a cash advance, so there will be a cash advance fee, plus interest on the advance starts to accrue immediately.
In my opinion and many others, using an ATM/Debit card is better.
Whatever you use, be sure to notify your bank of your departure and return dates and the countries you will visit.
Our backup option for ATMs is my wife's debit card to her unique account. If my card doesn't work or is lost/stolen, we can transfer cash into her account and have the card and PIN already in hand.
If you're traveling alone, you can accomplish the same thing by opening a second account with a minimum deposit. Take the debit card with you and transfer into the account if you need to use it. Always travel with the non-800 customer service numbers to any card you carry. 800 numbers won't work when calling from Europe.
I think most of us on this site don't like using a credit card for cash even as a backup (maybe as a last resort).
