Venice hotels

Traveling to venice in March. Can anyone recommend a place to stay (3 star and above). Seems the canal hotels are somewhat inexpensive compared to other places. We want to stay somewhere there is the canal view and close (if not in ) San Marco area.

Thanks

I was in Venice last February during Carnivale, and stayed in two different locations which was a nice way to see the city.

As good budget options, I recommend both of these:

This was the was a great budget price, and short walking distance to San Marco. There's a narrow staircase to some of the rooms, so I suggest asking for a lower level room. Rooms were small, but tidy & renovated bathrooms. The conceirge was extremely helpful & pleasant.

Second, great budget option:

Mixed reviews, but overall a great budget option. I enjoyed staying in this area of Venice, Dorsoduro, better. It's across the water from San Marco, but only by one stop. You can walk to the Peggy Guggenhiem museum, Rialto bridge and the area is sprinkled with quiet, quaint restaurants. Messner is small, but offers great service & breakfast & free internet. The rooms are budget, but the location & price is hard to beat!

James - After many years in Venezia I would strongly suggest -

Located Directly behind Piazza San Marco and easy walking to Rialto area. My friends Franco, Dario, and Stefano man the front desk - Nice free breakfast and an excellent Hotel.

I'm not sure of the star rating but I stayed in a lovely hotel last June. It's Pensione Accademia; it has fantastic gardens and we had a great corner room with views of the canal. http://www.pensioneaccademia.it/index.asp

The location in Venice is everything! There are several places you couldn't pay me to go. You can easily walk to San Marco area, my mother did several times a day and she's 81. There's also a great deck perched right next the canal where drinks are served in the afternoon. Close to the Peggy Guggenheim museum http://www.guggenheim-venice.it/
Go!

A second vote for Locanda Orseolo! We have stayed twice and it is now like visiting family. Lovely rooms and service. Outstanding breakfast. Perfect location on Canal Orseolo, near San Marco but tucked out of the way a bit. Check out their website. They often have good specials if you book directly with them.

On that note, does anyone have a good hotel recommendation on the low budget end. The above hotels are all pricing at $240-$250/night. We were hoping to find something at $200 a night max...might be hard to do!

I recommend two Venice hotels on the lower end of the budget:
1. www.pensioneguerrato.it is recommended in Rick Steves books and runs around 130 euros. It is near the Grand Canal.
2. www.hotelslucia.com near the train station. I stayed there in 2008 and it was simple but lovely! Doubles run around 100 euros

Hotel Al Piave, http://www.hotelalpiave.com

3-star, only a short walk to San Marco. Not fancy, but we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Not a canal view, but the price helped make up for that.

The Hotel Campiello is very nice... in Steves' book. Higher price, but well worth it. Fantastic buffet breakfast... will last you all day, wonderful shower, elevator, and a computer in the lobby to use for emails, etc.
