I'd start with a guidebook like Rick Steves', read up about the different districts of Rome, decide which district might suit you best, then check the guidebook's listings for lodgings in that district. On the web, try cross-pollinate.com for B&B's, vrbo.com for apartments, venere.com and tripadvisor.com for hotels.

Best to have a budget in mind first. Rome is expensive and needs air cond.(xtra) for summer stays so if you want suggestions let this helpline suggest with your aapprox budget per night for how many persons.
