40L carry on?

I'm trying to avoid checking luggage on my flight so I'm thinking of buying a back pack. The one I'm interested is REI venturi 40 pack (women) but the website lists the dimensions as 21.5 X 9. I'm not sure if this meet's Continental's requirements for carry on. Continental's website states carry-ons should not exceed 14 x 9 x 22 (LxWxH). Do you think this bag meets the requirements? I tried calling REI rep but they said b/c it's a discontinued product they couldn't give me the full dimensions.

Personally, I would pass on this choice since dimensions are unclear. There are many options out there that will meet the carry-on requirements.

The dimensions are perfectly fine, but I'm not at all crazy about it - esp. the top-loading part of it. I insist on panel-loading bags. And it looks like ALOT of ripstop; that's great for lightness and backpacking in the woods, but I want something more sturdy for travel. You're definitely looking at the correct size, though. And a not-stuffed, soft-sided bag will fit in any bag-sizer at the gate or any overhead luggage compartment. There are BAZILLIONS of carry-on sized bags that are reasonably priced, sturdy, and have legions of fans. That's the good news, and the bad news LOL! For example, many like the eBags "Weekender eTech Convertible" bag, but I want a more substantial padded waist belt. I DO love me some orange interior, though...! Same for the RS' bags...I own one, but it's for domestic travel only. Having said that, do consider it for yourself - I do like it OK, just not as well as my 'Europe bag'. The RS waist belt hits me very high across my upper rib cage. Now, my height is definitely in my torso and NOT my legs, but that's kinda crazy...And that brings me to a very important point - be sure to pack your 'bag candidate' with what you'll be taking with you, then spend some serious time walking around while wearing it. You might find a bag that should be perfect, but it simply doesn't fit YOU. Sign up for emails from 'eBags'; they have fantastic sales going on all of the time (20% off with Free Shipping, etc.) and their prices aren't inflated to start with, unlike some travel/luggage sites. I prefer a bag with a serious waist belt, because that's where I like to carry the weight of my bag. Luckily, I have a great bag, but there's no point in mentioning the style because it's been discontinued for years :-(
