My fiancee and I are considering doing a 2-week European jaunt for our honeymoon. We are considering doing Spain, France and Italy with a SelectPass saver. What European city is typically the cheapest the fly into? Does anyone have any recommendations on an itinerary? I have been extensively through Spain. Her family is originally from Italy. Thanks!
That seems like a lot of countries for two weeks. Are you just going to hit a few big cities?
Generally--and I am sure there are exceptions--the cheapest city is close to the place you want to start your trip. This is especially true if you are trying to see a lot, because your time is valuable too.
In two weeks you could spend a few days in some great cities in one or two countries. I think three countries is two much, especially if (a) one of them is Spain and (2) you are traveling by rail.
I would suggest starting in Paris and ending in either Rome or Venice. If France seems especially attractive to both of you (since you've both never been before), a stop in Provence would be brilliant that time of year, and it is enroute. Or take a night train from Paris to Italy and spend the bulk of your time there.
If you are concerned about costs, consider that a rail pass may not be the cheapest way to go.
Remember jet lag, rail strikes, travel time, and time for serendipity.
Bon voyage!
Adam, I love that phrase...I will need to make sure to build 'time for serendipity' into all future trips!
To answer the original question, I also think 3 countries is too much...especially for your honeymoon, you will not want to feel rushed. I would pick France and Italy but you should do some reading on those three countries and decide what interests you most.
"time for serendipity" Let's put that phrase into common travel parlance, along with "Ricknik" and "Blue book sign"... and can we lose "must-see"?
