3 weeks in Europe Itinerary Help

Greetings!! I am planning my first trip to Europe and need some help to narrow down the Itinerary. I will be flying into London and flying out of Rome. I plan to take the train for all of my transportation and would like to take one over night train during my trip. As of right now, this is my planned itinerary.

2 nights in London
3 nights in Paris
2 nights in Amsterdam
3 nights in Munich (already booked for Oktoberfest, so unable to change)
1 night in Prague
Night train to Venice??
1 night in Venice
3 nights in Cinque Terre
4-5 nights in Rome

I plan to stop in Brussels from Paris > Amsterdam, Cologne from Amsterdam > Munich, Milan from Venice > Cinque Terre and possibly a day trip to Pisa when I'm in Rome.

Is this outlandish? or do able? If I were to cut something, what would you change? Thanks for your help!

One night in Prague doesn't give you very much time there, maybe 18 hours.
Pisa is on the way from the Cinque Terre to Rome. Why not just do a stopover there as well.

I would cut out the trip to Prague (too much train travel to get there for one night and then to Venice)
You can get a direct train Munich to Venice so add another night to Venice.
And It would be easier to do the day trip to Pisa from Cinque Terre instead of Rome. I did this last summer

One night in Prague is shameful. Keep it for another trip when you've got more time.
Put that night onto Venice and take the day train from Munich. The line to Verona (where you can change for Venice) goes right through the mountains. Unforgettable trip.

I'm super sad to see Prague go! (My original plan had Vienna, Budapest and Prague...along with the other cities) until I realized I'd be spending more time on a train than anything else. Perhaps I should plan a trip around those three cities for another time.

Cinque Terre > Pisa > Rome if we decide on going to Pisa seems much more reasonable! Thank you!

Wowza!!! Just reading all that wore me out. I think you're trying to fit way to much into 3 weeks. You're also covering an incredible amount of territory in that time, wasting a lot on traveling. When we book our trips to Europe I try to do things that make sense. If it were me I would for sure take out London- its a wonderful city but we just got back from there last week and I thought 5 days wasn't enough. I also would absolutely not waste a trip to Prague only to stay one night. Its a minimum of 3 nights city. Amsterdam is great as well but its sort of out of the way for you and needs more then 2 nights...Since you are for sure booked in Munich for Octoberfest I would work from there. Also all those stops in-between? Brussels, Cologne, Milan, .... Oh boy... let me think about this... Sounds like you want to see quite a bit of Italy... And its not actually 3 weeks, it sounds like you have about 19 nights. OK here are my thoughts-
3 nights Munich
2 nights Venice (that will only leave you one full day in Venice because the other days are travel days)
5 nights Rome
3 nights Cinque Terre
3 nights Milan- ****although I would not stay in Milan I would stay on Lake Como and do your day trip from Como to Milan- its super easy
3 nights in Paris

Something like that, or flip flopped or switch something out with Paris. Everyone has different preferences and dream places they've always wanted to go. You probably have time to do one of the out of the way places but I would pick it as your fly into or out of city. Like Amsterdam, thats a great city to fly into and get connections from, as well as Paris... know what I mean? Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. We've been everywhere on your itinerary BUT not all the same trip.

Ahhh you don't want Prague to go? You could fly into Prague do that for 3 nights and work down. Take out Paris/London/Amsterdam and give Prague a minimum of 3 nights.

I second seeing Pisa from CT

Aly- As sad as it is for me to cross off Prague, I think I might have to save it for another trip. The stop over trips (Brussels, Cologne and Milan) were partially because they were on the way to the next destination and also because in Cologne and Milan I want to see the Cathedral. So I wouldn't be spending much time there (maybe a few hours).

I should also mention that I already booked my plane ticket. Ooops! So into London and out of Rome is kind of set. Which is slightly unfortunate as your itinerary seems more logical. I am now thinking of crossing off Amsterdam and spending another day somewhere else. Ahhhhh! There is just so much I want to see!

Definitely drop Amsterdam and add the nights to a London. Two days is not nearly enough especially since you will start there and may be jet lagged.

Glad you decided to drop Prague. It made no sense and you need at least one more night in Venice.

Now I think you're good to go. Hope you have a great trip!

Isn't it SO tough!!! Yep- good to know. London it is. You'll love it. Just spend more than 2 nights if possible. It will be easy to fly into whatever city you decide on from London... (I may be weird but I like Amsterdam better then Paris-). You'll also be surprised how much time it takes to travel or even get into the center of a city to visit cathedrals and such. Just make sure you don't feel too rushed.

Keep in mind that most travelers are somewhat sleep-deprived and jetlagged on their arrival day, so it's hard to do serious sightseeing that first day. Think of it as mostly just wandering around outdoors, trying to stay awake. Take this into account when deciding how many nights to spend in your arrival city.

As well as Prague, consider dropping Amsterdam, and adding a short stop in Florence.

3 nights in London
4 nights in Paris
3 nights in Munich
1 night train from Munich to Venice
2 nights in Venice
2 nights in Cinque Terre
2 nights in Florence
4 nights in Rome

While I admit that I used to do trips like this in my 20's, I look at this itinerary now (early-50's) and just say, "no thanks".

I think you might even still enjoy this, though if you plot all these points on a map, one thing will stick out like a sore thumb (probably Prague).

Regardless of our ages, I would suggest a northern extreme of London and a southern of Munich and just fill in the blanks from there. Add a few days in England that are not London (Cambridge, Bath, Canterbury, Oxford, etc.).
You could enjoy a week in Amsterdam with day trips. Maybe slow it down a bit, add a third night and maybe some side trips to Haarlem, Leiden, Hague, Middleburg, windmills, Brugges, etc.?
3 nights in Paris and then off to Germany? That's it for France? If I had a month in France I would cover a fifth of it. How about adding a few there and taking day trips to Versailles, Normandy, Chartres, Rennes, etc. The list goes on and on.
Then, on your way to Munich you have Cologne and the Rhine Valley, the Romantic Road, stupendous medieval towns like Wurzburg, Rothenburg, Nurnberg, Strasbourg, Colmar, etc.

If I had 21 days, starting in London and ending in Munich, I would do this:

London (5 nights with day trips to some of above)
Paris (6 nights with day trips to some of above)
Amsterdam (5 nights with stop en-route in Brugges)
2 or 3 nights from Amsterdam to Munich
Munich

Of course, you could add stops instead of doing day trips and this would save money on hotels since they'll cost less in the smaller places.

Next time you get 21 days, visit Italy.

My guess is that you are a few decades away from retirement age, which gives you many years to return to Europe and visit more places. If you try to see too many places at once, you run the risk of not really seeing them. 2 nights in London gives you one (jetlagged) day there. Since London and Munich are locked in, choose between Paris and A'dam and give yourself more time in London and the other city. Paris - take Eurostar from London, then high-speed train to Munich. Or fly from London City airport to A'dam, then fly to Munich.

Slow it down. One night means you only have an afternoon to see a city then off again the next morning. I agree with djp_syd. He has a great schedule.

Hello inhalestatic. I suggest cut out the cities that are to the East : Munich and Prague. Add nights at London and Paris.

You wanted an overnight train and there is a direct one from Munich to Venice. It's also possible to travel overnight between Amsterdam and Munich, but you actually connect to the night train at Cologne (which counts as 2 travel days on a flexi style of rail pass), and arrive to Munich at 6:00 a.m. (yawn).

The route from Munich to Venice via the Brenner Pass over the Alps is a scenic journey you may want to take during the day.
