3 Months In Europe Budget Help

Hi All.

I am planning to spend 3 months in Europe as I have been recently laid off. It is mid Jan, then 3 months afterwards. I already have a ticket which lands in Frankfurt and departs Berlin.

I have seen Germany and want to simply get a eurail pass and head off towards Hungary then Ljubljana, Croatia etc. making my way to Berlin.

I plan on hostelling with a couple of hotel splurges.

My previous excursion to Europe was only for 2 weeks all, hotel stay.

I was looking for help trying to figure out how much to budget. I am fairly frugal anyway, but I really need to get away and have some fun, losing a job of 14 years isn't such a great holiday gift.

Thanks ahead of time for any help...

Stephen Seattle.

Sorry to hear about your job loss Stephen. I think it's terrific that you're doing something so positive in response.
I would think $100 a day, as you suggest in your second post, would be enough.
I hope you have a great time!

I have tried to budget expenses on my 20 international trips without success. You can estimate what you will spend by allowing as much for food as you might spend here. Always use your ATM card to buy currency.

Eat a small breakfast in a standup deli, buy meat, bread, fruit and drink at a supermarket and picnic for lunch.

Choose cheap, but filling dinner entres and resist spending when you can. Many restaurants offer lunch specials. Be sure to read the menus posted at the front door throughout Germany, Hungary and Croatia.

No one can estimate what you spend because your choices will be different than others. Stephens advice of $100 a day may be enough, but it may not be.

I have not been to Europe in 3 years, but I spent only about $80 a day on that trip.

Wherever you go ask if there is a discount. There are many which are not advertised, including senior discounts. You only learn of them by asking.

Maggie thanks for the reply, I think it will be a welcome break. After posting this I did some more researching and came up with that number, so good to know its on the mark.

Carl, thanks for the tips.

I ve also found that eating my main meal at noon is easy on my budget but also eliminates the later evening dinnertime that European restauants have. Many dont open until after 7PM.
