Any suggestions on where to get the best rate on travel insurance?
Also is it necessary to buy extra car insurance other than the liability that is part of the rental agencies?

if you are a member of AAA - go on their site and type travel insurance - they have good rates

American Express Travel Insurance - you can buy it by the month for around $15. It pays for illnesses not covered by your health insurance; pays for shipping you home (dead or alive). Just get it several weeks in advance if you have any serious existing conditions that may require treatment while away from home. Don't know about car insurance but like someone else said, Triple A can probably help you. Also, I've heard that it now is necessary to have an international drivers license (get it at Triple A).
