26 December - Central and Eastern Europe

Hello, I'm a US citizen living in South Korea who has done quite a bit of travel in Europe. I've done Christmas week (after Xmas, that is) travel in the past - mainly Vienna. So I'm aware of all of the caveats in terms of weather and closure. Here's my question: I'm planning to fly out of Seoul on 25th December which gets to me to Europe sometime in the late evening on the 25th and I'll likely fly back to Korea on 5th January. I generally pick one country and stay there but I'm feeling a bit more adventurous. Germany is likely the focus of my trip as I have friends in Berlin and I'd like to spend 31 December there. But I'm having a hard time figuring out where I want to start and where 26 December will be the least impacted by closures. It wasn't bad as a tourist in Vienna on 26 December the past 2 years but things in London about a decade back where pretty much all closed. My main interest in 20th century history and my favorite trips have often been further East(not just Budapest and Prague but I also loved Sofia)...and I'm getting better one way fares from Seoul to Eastern cities such as Warsaw than Western cities (easy flights through Moscow via Aereflot). Any advice? Thanks, Geoff

Friends were in Budapest and everything was closed on the 26th. My impression is that is the case for most of Eastern Europe. If you don't get any definitive answers here, try the individual forums on Trip Advisor. There are always locals around who are more knowledgeable. Another option is to look at a couple of major tourist sites in the cities you are considering to see if they are open on the 26th

Thanks for this. I just posted on Warsaw's Trip Advisor site to see... But, yes, you may be right. It may make sense to start further West and travel East later in my trip.
