I was just wondering if you has a rail pass with a certan number of days , say 5, and you take a night train leaving before midnight and arriving in the morning does this count as two days of travel??? Also if say taking a train from Paris through southern france is it conceivable to get on and off the train a couple times during the same day? Thanks for any info.

Go to the "Railpasses" tab and read about the 7 PM rule. If you use a pass, and board an overnight train after 7 PM, you just use the following (arrival) day on your pass.
If you are using a pass, you can get on and off as many times as you please that day.
In Germany, there are Länder tickets that allow unlimited use (on/off) of regional trains within a state. Also point to point tickets over 100 km allow you to get on/off as long as you finish you travel by the end of the following day. Discount tickets, like Dauer-Spezial, are date and train specific, but you can build in big breaks when you buy them.
