21 Days France & Italy

In May we will be flying into Paris and out of Rome. We have 21 full days in Europe and now need to plan them without a lot of time to do it. We would prefer to travel by train but would be willing to rent a car here and there if needed. We are planning 4 days in Paris (1 for Versailles) then 4 days in Rome. With in between wide open. My husband would love to do Normandy but it's the opposite direction of my mind wants to plan. Does anybody have itinerary suggestions for the 21 days? I should also note that ones in Italy I would prefer to stick to the riviera/west coast (Cinque Terre, Florence, Siena, Assisi, Orvieto) to Rome.

If you have 21 nights on the ground in Europe.

Day 1. Arrive Paris - 4 nights
Day 5. Train to Provence (Avignon?) - 3 nights
Day 8. Train to Côte d'Azur (Nice?)- 3 nights
Day 11. Train to Cinque Terre (Monterosso?) - 3 nights
Day 14. Train to Florence - 3 nights
(Day trip to Siena)
Day 17. Train to Orvieto - 2 nights
(Day trip to Assisi)
Day 19. Train to Rome - 3 nights
Day 22. Depart Rome

We have 21 nights. We land in Paris on at 8am on a red eye from the East Coast and fly out on the 22nd day late after noon from Rome (but not counting that as a sight seeing day).

If your husband really wants to see Normandy than plan on returning to Paris before heading to Italy. I'd fly Paris to Venice and then take trains to Florence and/or Siena. Rent a car in Siena and drive through Tuscany and stay in a small hilltown and then drop the car in Orvieto before taking the train to Rome.

They aren't really the same, but I feel as though the French and Italian rivieras are enough alike that you could deemphasize one of them.

I suggest skipping or downsizing Nice and saving it for another trip. Spend the time in Italy and/or Provence.
