I am trying to keep the logistics simple, I can take a single train from Amsterdam to Paris for example. What is my best option for the train from Venice? I assume Florence? Since we have already been to Florence I'd spend one night and then get the car outside the city to drive through Tuscany. Any other good connections from Venice to Tuscany that would be better? We are thinking of spending the night in a different town each night of Tuscany and finding rooms as we go. What town would be good for a night to drop the car and take a train to Rome?

Any other logistics suggestions for this Itinerary?

Florence is served by direct train from Venice, or Chuisi and Orvieto are smaller towns on the same main train line where you can pick up or drop off a car near the train station. You might also want to stop and see the towns. Destinations "further into" Tuscany, such as Siena or Pisa, require one train connection.

Sounds like Florence is your best option for both pick-up and return, since it has the best train connections. Have you thought about staying in one agriturismo in Tuscany? Might be nice not to live out of a suitcase. . .

What about flying into Amsterdam and out of Rome? Train from Venice to Florence is about two hours.

Thanks for the replies. It'll probably be Florence but I'll look into Orvieto maybe for the drop off. An Agriturismo would be nice but we like to have a nice dinner in a restaurant and not have to drive aftward. Seeing a few towns at night is also appealing. I will start a seperate thread on the subject .
