2 weeks trip with kids

We are traveling to europe for 2 weeks with our kids aged 7 and 3. We made a cursory itinerary for the visa application. I am worried we are trying to see too much and it won’t ve pleasurable for the kids. We currently plan to pick a car in Munich on Jul 1 and drop it off at Stuttgart. We head to UK from there for another 2 weeks (which will be a separate post). Here is the itinerary as things stand.

Jun 29 Arrive in Munich
Jun 30 Munich
Jul 1 Munich to Salzburg drive
Jul 2 Salzburg
Jul 3 Salzburg to Hallstadt day trip
Jul 4 Salzburg to Innsbruck
Jul 5 Innsbruck
Jul 6 Innsbruck
Jul 7 Innsbruck - Neuschwenstein - Konstanz
Jul 8 Konstanz
Jul 9 Konstanz - Liechtenstein/St Gallen day trips
Jul 10 Konstanz - Colmar, Freiburg - Strasbourg
Jul 11 Strasbourg
Jul 12 Strasbourg - Rothenburg
Jul 13 Rothenburg - Stuttgart
Jul 14 Stuttgart
Jul 15 Stuttgart - London

Can we skip some places and spend more time in the Lake Constance area?

Are you picking up a car and having it for your transportation until you reach Stuttgart? Do the adults in your family have any specific interests because the 7 year old and especially the 3 year old will enjoy the parks, fountains, gentle hikes, colorful outdoor cafes, swans in ponds, etc.

Not knowing the answers to the 2 questions above, I’ll tackle your other question about allocation of days to the places you’ve chosen. BTW, I count 16 nights in your above itinerary.

2 nights Munich I might add a night to Munich to get over jet lag and let the kids play in the brooks in the Englishergarten on one day.

3 nights Salzburg with a day trip in the middle to Hallstatt (your rental car will need a sticker to drive on Austrian autobahns that you can pick up as you enter Austria from Germany)

2 nights Innsbruck visiting Neuschwanstein on the way to Lake Konstanz

4 nights Überlingen (first choice) or Lindau on Lake Konstanz, best towns for beaches, bikes, parks, flowers, lake promenades, gelato, ferry rides, etc.

3 nights Strasbourg with day trips to Colmar and Freiburg (the kids will really enjoy playing in the little waterways in the cobblestone streets)

2 nights Stuttgart

So let's take on the kids view point by adding up the total hours of time spent in the car for the duration of the trip.
Add traveling in a car during the summer heat.............
Add time to find parking...........
So what will their memories be?
Curious is you plotted your proposed journey on a map?

@Mona Thanks! Yes the plan is to drop the car off in stuttgart (i have the rental as a one way). The others on the vacation are me (41) and wife (39). We like a mix of touristy and off beat places, not huge thrillseekers, enjoy citywalks and historical/cultural landmarks. We aren’t foodies or beer drinkers.

@Steven we have tried to reduce car drives to under 2-3 hours per day (usually only on travel days from city to city). 3 yo still naps, so were planning to mainly drive in the afternoons when she naps. The car is also so we are not on a train timetable when getting from one base to another. I personally want to reduce our base cities, hence asking for advice here

Appreciate your reply, especially the web link which shall prove quite useful for future posts.
I would encourage your 7 year old to practice French at every opportunity. Consider the level of engagement when his opening words are "Bon Jour!' when locals may be expecting the use of English regardless of the local language.
Overall I see five days of which part are spent in transitioning from point to point. Over a 14 day time frame that is, in my opinion, a lot of time spent getting from point to point. Transitions come at the expense of effective vacation time, increases opportunity for travel "glitches", add stress and are prone to be more impacted by weather. Have you searched for parks, playgrounds, kids activities and opportunities to take a swim break? You can find on You Tube and/or Netflix some great content about car travels in Europe with kids.

Op, I've traveled those areas a lot with a kid in that same age range. And so know a lot of fun stuff to do along that general route.

One thing I would suggest is that instead of staying in Innsbruck you push through to Shruns Austria. It's in a side valley right along your route. It was Hemingway's favorite place to go skiing and hiking in Europe. There is a fantastic community pool with slides and all kinds of fun stuff, and in the same complex a totally awesome, super clean, natural pool that is kept that way by a balance of plants and living animals. You can swim with a salamanders that help keep it clean. It's a pretty little Alpine town and there are lifts going out of it to all kinds of cool Alpine huts that have charming playgrounds.

Much smaller place then Innsbruck, more charming and accessible for children.

I'll be back with more tips 🙂 it's an easy area for you to have a great time and also keep children very happy
