2 week winter trip in Europe

Hey everyone. My girlfriend and I are taking a trip to Europe this December. We land on the first in Munich, where we are staying for 4 nights. Afterwards, we are gonna spend 3 nights in Switzerland before probably flying out of Lucerne, Switzerland on our way to Tromsø, Norway for the last 6 nights of our trip.

Our plans were to visit Christmas markets and castles basing ourselves in Munich before checking out the Swiss alps for a couple of days. Afterwards, we are spending basically the next week chasing Aurora lights, Husky sledding, and whale watching in Norway.

YES we know it’s totally rushed and our time would probably be better served with that first week in either Germany or Switzerland but we don’t get to travel very often (years and years apart between trips) so we are definitely committed to this RUSHED plan.

My question is how can we make the most out of our first week between Germany AND Switzerland. Our initial plan was to take a train from Munich to Lauterbrunnen, spend the rest of that travel day there and the entire next day just taking in the alpine views before spending our final third day in Lucerne in preparation to fly out the following day. Are there better ideas? I KNOW Austria would probably be easier to see the Alps but our hopes are completely set on Switzerland, so much so that we are ok spending only 3 days in the country. We just don’t want to waste more time than we need to. Should we consider a different part of Switzerland?

Suggestions are totally appreciated :) Please don’t think that we aren’t aware on the rushed time frame. If we could stay longer we would but we don’t want to wait years and years to go back to Europe. Thanks again and cheers :)

Munich to Lauterbrunnen will take at least 7 hours by train. Or you can fly in 55 minutes to Lucerne. I agree that Austria (specifically Salzburg) would be a great alternative and a better use of time. Or the Garmisch area. Even Bolzano would be great. The Dolomites are as spectacular as the Swiss Alps IMO. With better, cheaper food. But I digress.

But if your heart is set on the Swiss alps, so be it. I would stay in Wengen or Murren for the amazing views. The next day you can explore the other areas. Next day take a late train to Lucerne.

To prevent confusion when it comes time to buy that plane ticket: There is no airport in Lucerne. You'll be flying out of Zurich. Although I haven't done it, I've often read that it is no problem to spend the night in Lucerne before a Zurich flight. There's excellent rail service.

I'd recommend checking out flights immediately, because it appears only some days in December have non-stop flights, and I see some really painful fares on skyscanner.com. Buy the tickets from the airline operating the flight.
