18 month old....silly carseat question

Hello all!
We will be traveling to Greece in June 2015 for my sister's wedding with our 18 m/o in tow. We are not planning on bringing a carseat as he is riding in our lap on the flight (crazy? maybe, but that's another discussion). I know for public transportation it won't be an issue, but if we have to take a cab, can we just sit him on our lap?

We don't live in a big city and while we've both traveled abroad before, this is the 1st time with our son, so we're just not sure how that would work in Europe. To be honest, I'm not even sure what people do in big cities here in the US. Bottom line, will we be OK riding in a cab with our toddler if necessary?

Thanks for your help!!

Angela,

I know it's a hassle to take a car-seat with you-- but keep in mind that the car-seat is for his own safety.

Sure, you can sit him on your lap, but if you're in an accident, he will go flying out of the car!

You can contact taxi company & ask if they have car-seats for toddlers.

Safe travels!

Greece is the last place you want to ride in a car with a child on your lap instead of in a car seat. The drivers there are nuts. If you wouldn't do it in the US, you don't want to do it anyplace else either. The cars are just as dangerous.

Either bring a car seat with you, as most airlines let you check this or get your sister to have one at the airport for you when you arrive. You do not want to ride in a car in Greece with your child unprotected.

In other large cities, cabs will often have a car seat or at the airport, will call one that does. Not sure about Greece.

I think you already know the answer to your question. Of course you can ride in a taxi without a carseat. It is a matter of what you are comfortable doing and how much of a risk you are willing to take. Where exactly will you be for the wedding? Is it on an island, Athens or somewhere else?

Taxis are excluded from seatbelt laws everywhere in Europe and here in Canada.. imagine its the same in States.. However.. that does not mean its safe .
In Greece they do drive like maniacs. If I chose not to bring a seat.. I would elect to either take a bus, or arrange for a car service that provides a car seat.
We travelled with three kids.. so at any one time at least two were in carseats.. and yes.. we always brought them.. and paid for seats on planes for them. It was a pain sometimes.. but on other hand I was feeling pretty smug when we travelled with friends once to Hawaii ( six hour flight) and their 18 month old drove them nuts.. he had to be passed back and forth between them.. stood on their laps and hung over the seats.. and they had to tag eat and use bathroom. We sat near them and had our 2 in carseats.. baby sleeping and toddler sitting .. much nicer flight for us.

I appreciate everyone's feedback.

We are flying into Santorini and staying in a villa in Finikia. My sister is getting married in Oia…please don't think she lives in Greece, but merely chose it as a spot to get married. The villa says they have a van to pick us up and I will contact them to see if they have a car seat. After Oia we are going to Athens where I plan to rely on subway & bus transportation, so really it is only the ride to/from the airport on Santorini.

Thank you all again for your help! I assumed driving in Greece would be pretty much like the rest of Europe!

Angela,

I hope it all works out for you.

Make sure your son's vaccinations are up to date.

Remember to have something ready for your son to drink when the plane starts to descend to avoid him from getting
a terrible earache.

Enjoy your sister's wedding & have a great trip!

Santorini is beautiful & Athens is amazing!
