18 Days itinerary

We are travelling to Europe in April for 18 days. We will be spending one of our days to attend a friend's wedding in The Nethelands. We have came up with the following itinerary. Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

31 March Arrive in London
1 April London, night ferry to Amsterdam
2 April Amsterdam
3 April Nijmegen (Wedding), Overnight at Cologne
4 - 5 April Bacharach. Overnight train on 5th to Venice
6-7 April Venice
8 April Florence
9 April Siena
10 April San Gimignano
11 April Florence
12-13 April Cinque Terre
14-16 April Paris
17-18 April London

We originally wanted to stay for 4 nights in Florence and do day trips to Siena and San Gimignano. But we have read many reviews saying that both Siena and San Gimignano are best enjoyed in the evening when the day trippers have left.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

It seems as though you are covering a lot of ground in a short time. Have you considered how much of your time will be spent on trains between destinations? I see that you're taking at least 1 night train which will help, but it still seems to me that a lot of your time will be spent getting from one destination to the next.

Actually, I forgot to mention that we will be taking a flight from Pisa to Paris after our 2 nights stay in Cinque Terre.

For the other train rides from Nijmegen to Koln, it is about 2hrs. We are going to Koln just to stay overnight as we do not want to leave from Nijmegen to Bacharach in the day time, which would take about 4 hours to reach.

The rest of the other train rides are within italy. I think the travelling time is probably around 1-2hrs between our destinations in Italy.

Do you think that would be quite exhausting?

Yes.

Exhausting, yes.

I think you especially should account for the ways that things just take longer in Italy than in northern Europe. Things are unexpectedly closed, there may be strikes, delays, etc.

You could fly home from Paris; you might skip London this time around, since you won't have much time to to anything there. Or fly into Amsterdam and home from London, which would at least consolidate your time there.

Sam Gimignano is a lovely overnight.

Yes, it will definitely be exhausting. It doesn't matter if you are 18, 30 or 45. You will get really tired. Instead of covering that much ground, try to spend a day kick back and relax every now and then.
