We are traveling in June for 18 days with 4 adults, a 3 year old & a 1 year old. We will be traveling through the Bernese Overland mainly, from Zurich to there for a few days & then to Milan. From Milan we are going to Varenna, Varenna to Venice, Venice to Salzburg, Salzburg to Vienna. With a few side trips in there, we are trying to figure out the most cost effective way for us to travel. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
The Man in Seat 61 website is an excellent, unbiased resource for train travel in Europe. Generally, point to point tickets purchased online, in advance, from the websites of the national rail carriers is the most cost effective. Specifically, Salzburg to Vienna, you can travel on either Westbahn, a private rail company, or an OeBB train. Westbahn trains run every hour, have free wifi and you buy the tickets on the train from the conductor for 25.50 Euro per adult. For OeBB, you buy online, in advance from www.oebb.at/en/ (the English option). These tickets will be as low as 19 Euro.
Thank you! That is very helpful. I am going to check those options out for our family.
