Several of our tickets thru the Pacific rim have a 48cm length limit for carryons. (9"x13"x18.5") It seems that the FAA standard is 21" because that's the size I'm finding here in NJ USA.

Any suggestions for something like the Rick Steves Convertible 21" backpack, but in a shorter length? I'm travelling with a 3 year old and need both shoulder and backpack options, depending on her mood.

RS used to sell a shorter bag that was the same as his older model convertible. Check with them or search the net. Some of these bags are not availabel throught the RS store but only through other online retailers. (I know, it makes no sense.)
