We are renting a car in Munich after three weeks in Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg and Munich for Octoberfest. Looking for a country destination we were thinking about a couple of days in Garmish. Has anyone hiked the Partnach Gorge ? Please give us a few suggestions about this and other hikes and sites in Bavaria. We have been to Ludwig's castle on Rick's Best of Europe tour already. Thanks..Hank, Novato
Tom recently wrote a great post about Partnachlamm in the Trip Reports section under Germany: Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He did the long tough hike (which I haven't done.) But the walk on the rocky pathway beside the roaring river in the gorge is one of favorite walks in Germany -- summer or winter.
Hey, ho... yes, you can read the trip report. But the brief summary... it's an easy walk. If you'll have a car, you can park by the Olympic Stadium, and depending on how long you linger, it will take about an hour to and from. Without a car, the Olympic Stadium is a about a 10-20 minute walk from most the hotels in the main sections of Garmisch and Partenkirchen. Farther away from the Edelweiss resort, if you're thinking of that. Should you choose so, and if you are properly provisioned, you can continue the rough slog up to the Königshaus am Schachen (Ludwig II's mountain chalet).
"Please give us a few suggestions about this and other hikes and sites in Bavaria." What is your level of fitness and experience with Alpine hikes?
