I think it will be a good thing in the long run, but it will take the airlines time to adjust and find where markets exist that can support direct routes.

I'm hopeful as well. It has already resulted in a handful of additional non-stop routes between Seattle and European cities. Unfortunately, there are other things that plague the airline industry so this by itself won't be a salvo and probably won't result in lower fares. Still, having more choice is always good in my opinion.
