I'm renewing my passport for the first time. This may seem like a silly question but is the original passport returned with the new one?

Hi Teena,
You will most likely receive it separately- maybe a few days after you receive your new passport, but you will receive it back.

Just renewed the kids' passports since Christmas. Two days after the new ones arrived the old ones came with holes punched in the cover.

I have always received both passports in the same envelope. The old one will have a hole punched through it.

When I renewed mine, I didn't know if the old one would be returned. So I included a separate note, asking the office to send the old one back, if possible. It was shipped along the new passport.
