one day in London

We will have one full day in London before beginning our tour in The Netherlands. We want to visit the Tower of London and the British Museum. Any suggestions on how to best do this? Thanks! Tammy

Find the opening hours for both attractions on the day you'll be there, and visit whichever one opens first earliest - if the same, I'd do the tower first, as it can get quite crowded. Get there at opening. Be aware that it's easy to spend many hours there, so keep an eye on the time. The British museum is huge so it's best to familarize yourself with their collection online and focus on what things you really want to see, because you won't be able to see everything in a few hours.

Does your one day include travelling? If you are flying in or out (or going by train come to that) on the same day then you will be pressed for time and you may find it helpful to use the feature on the British Museum website which suggests what you could see if you have one hour or three hours available. http://www.britishmuseum.org/visiting/planning_your_visit.aspx Also note that the BM is open until 20.30 on Fridays, if you can arrange to be in London on that day.

Hello Tammy. Going to the Tower of London, ride in a London Underground train (the Tube) on the Circle Line or District Line to Tower Hill station. Walk to Tower of London. To avoid the long ticket-buying lines at the Tower, you have several options. The easiest is to buy your tickets at the Trader's Gate gift shop, located down the steps from the Tower Hill "Tube" station. Or at the Tower Welcome Centre to the left of the normal ticket lines (credit card only). Or at any London Tourist Information office. Or book online at www.hrp.org.uk Or by Telephone : 0844-482-7799 in Great Britain. Or Telephone 011-44-20-3166-6000 from the United States of America. (Fee = 2 GBP). Then pick up your tickets at the Tower. There is no need to rent an audioguide, or to buy the Tower guide book. If you want to see the Crown Jewels, arrive there before 10:00 A.M., go there first. Going to the British Museum : Ride in a London Underground train on the Central line to the Tottenham Court Road station, walk through exit # 3 and walk, four blocks, to the museum. The museum's main entrance is on Great Russell Street. The museum has a cloak room. Fee for putting an item there = 1.50 GBP. You may carry a small bag in the galleries. There are three places for eating food in the Museum complex. The self-service Court Café (sandwiches and salads). The Court Restaurant. The Gallery Café (warm food, cafeteria - style). Near the museum, there are several cafe's and pubs and markets for fast food, along Great Russell Street and Museum Street.
