Transportation Questions - Arles to Siena

My husband and I will be in France (Paris, Beaune, Arles) for two weeks this May - ending our stay on May 26. On May 28 we need to be in Siena, Italy for three nights to reunion with a friend.

We are working on how to travel between the two (Arles and Siena) and where best to stay the nights of May 26 and May 27. We do not wish to get a rental car.

Train?

We have explored Arles to Cinque Terre and realize that would be 9-10 hours by train.
If train, break up trip with overnight stop in Nice? Second night in Cinque Terre or Lucca?

Fly?

What airports in southern France best to fly to Pisa? Florence? Rome and then take train on to Siena?

Any ideas/options with this transportation question much appreciated.

Msweeney,

Train travel from South of France to CT will be very long as you have found out.

You could break up your trip & stay in Nice but you will still have about 5 hours of train travel to get to CT (Monterosso) or 8.5 hours to get to Siena with multiple train transfers.

Your best option would be to fly from Marseille or Nice to Florence then take bus to Siena.

If you want to visit the CT, then you fly to Pisa then train to CT via La Spezia.

Edit: Keep in mind that Siena is much closer to Florence than Rome.
