Paris hotels

Hoping for recommendations for hotels in Paris near city center and/or good public transit. Suggestions will be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

How many people and what is your budget? Do you want basic or maybe a 3 star? Will air conditioning be essential? Would you consider a B&B?

There are probably a dozen threads on Paris hotels just in the last month. I'd search those first.

I like the Latin quarter and find it convenient for transit. You might start there. I usually start with the Rick Steves guide or booking.com to sort thru options. You might want to let people know your priorities. There are a lot of hotels in Paris and a lot of them are quite good.

Booking.com is a good way to look for hotels, it has useful filters (stars, price range, neighborhood, etc.) and a map view. Also its reviews are by people who have actually stayed there. RS and other guidebooks also have listings but they're only a few of the hundreds of hotels "near city center and/or good public transit." The Latin Quarter is a good convenient area with many options, including the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles where we stayed years ago. Look for a place near a Metro station, preferably one where two or more lines connect so you can get to different destinations easily. Closer to the river = more expensive, other things being equal. If it's a summer trip, air conditioning would be very desirable and worth paying for.

When you've identified several candidate hotels, look at their own websites, and also use Google Earth "street view" to eyeball their immediate surroundings, looking for convenient cafes, bakeries, a bank with ATM, and other services you might want nearby. When you're ready to make a reservation, do it on the hotel's own website if possible.

And/or stay tuned as our friends here volunteer many recommendations. It would help to specify your price range and when you're going.

When folks are wanting more responses to a question they post, rather than doing a new post, they could modify/edit or respond to the original post which will boost it up the list. Sometimes more specifics in the title will help get responses. Like Paris hotels near XXXX or for a family, couple etc. Not a criticism, just a suggestion.

As a general rule, people who provide more details are likely to get more useful responses. It's a waste of time to give a bunch of suggestions if they turn out to be in totally the wrong price category for the poster. We all want nice, well-located hotels. The question is how nice and how well-located we can afford.

Not sure what your budget is, but don't rule out staying in the absolute center of Paris on Ile St. Louis because you think the rates will be out of sight. Depending on your needs and the season, you may find rates quite reasonable.

We've stayed at Hotel des Deux-Iles and really enjoyed the location. It's quiet with friendly and helpful front desk personnel. Very well located -- cross the river and you will be in the Marais -- cross it the other way and you'll be in The Latin Quarter. Walk to the end of the island, cross the bridge, and you'll be close to Notre Dame -- such as it is now as much of the immediate area is closed off. The Metro is near enough that getting anywhere is not a problem.

We email them and request rate and booking information and get a reply within 24 hours. We opted out of the hotel breakfast as it seemed, to us, expensive for what was offered. If you do stay on the island we know where you can get a great little breakfast for a good price.

If they can't accommodate you, a few doors away is their sister hotel named Hotel de Lutece. We would stay there based simply on our experience at Hotel des Deux-Iles.

There is another hotel on the island named Hôtel Saint-Louis en l´Isle. They have (or had) a dedicated shuttle that will pick you up at the airport . Not sure about the cost. It may be complimentary depending on the length of your stay. Now that taxis into the city from the airport charge a flat rate that may be the way to get to any hotel.

Spend a few minutes googling hotels on the island and that should give you an idea if staying on there is a possibility, or if you should rule it out.

Love this location that TC is talking about! It spoiled us being so centrally located......we stayed in Hotel de Lutece and the convenience of walking right out of your hotel and being so close to the center of Paris was great!
