You need an International Drivers Permit and your state drivers license. The IDP translates your license into other languages. You can get it at AAA.

For more discussion you could do a search on 'international drivers license' and choose 'Forum', then 6 months or newer. There have been lots and lots of the threads on this subject.

Yes, an IDP is now required in France, unless you have an official translation of your license. It's a relatively new requirement.
