We are looking for an apartment in Paris for the first week of November. I have checked with several companies and really like the apartment and quote from Guest Services Apartments. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with them? Also, what would your choice be between the 5th and 7th arrondisement?
Many thanks for your input!
There was a thread about two months ago discussing Guest Apartment Services. I tried to add a link to it; not sure if I was successful.
I rented an apartment thru them about 18 months ago and was very happy with their service. I would recommend them highly.
As I recall, most of their apartments are on Ile St. Louis or in the Marais. I've stayed in the 5th and the 7th on other occasions and personally prefer the 7th but both are quite nice. The 7th is a bit quieter and a bit further from many tourist sites, but it works for me.
The Apartment we rented thru Guest Apartment Services was in the Marais (4th) and I thought that area was great as well.
Best of Luck.
The 5th arrondissement is what most people think of when they imagine what Paris will be like - small, winding streets, interesting architecture, small shops, stuff going on. Depending on the address, this would be my recommendation.
The 7th has many more large Haussmannien buildings, and there are long "dry stretches" where it can be hard to find a cafe or anything else to do, depending on where you are in that arrondissement. If you like to go to bed early, this would be a good choice.
Just so you are aware, there was a law passed this Summer, which will prohibit vacation rentals from advertising on the internet, unless the owner has complied with City regulations and secured a registration number from the Mayor's Office.
Agencies aren't saying how they will handle rentals which have no registration numbers.
I'm not sure I would rent an apartment until the dust settles and you can be certain that your reservation won't be cancelled at the last minute.
If this is your first trip to Paris, and if you are only staying a few days, you should probably look for a legal apart'hotel, especially if you need a kitchen. You'll also benefit from having a 24/7 reception desk staff to help you with whatever you might need.
This is a very nice option, near many of the things you'll want to see and do, as well as convenient to transportation.

Citadines and Adagio are good chain options for legal apart'hotels, with many locations and price points to choose from.
Otherwise, tourist numbers are down significantly in Paris, so you should be able to pick and choose from any number of hotels which meet your budget.
I'm so happy I found this website, what a treat as I plan our next escape to Paris. I am already finding good information and will read much more, but decided to jump in on this topic. We've rented from Guest Apartments several times over the years and really love them. I would have a hard time renting from anyone else after the great experiences we've had. They couldn't be any nicer and we trust them implicitly. Liliane in the office is a doll, and made a few restaurant reservations for us at our request. The apartments we rented were ideal, and just as pictured (Lilas, Ginger several times, and one other flower one I can't remember the name of). I really like their 360degree views of every room in the apartment so you know exactly what you are getting. Our 1st and 2nd visits we stayed near the Eiffel Tower and liked it, but our eyes were opened when we started staying on the other side of the city. It's so much more convenient, more places to walk to, and feels more like Paris should feel. I realize now that the 7th is pretty sleepy and can't imagine staying there now (......well, maybe if it was free!!). I have my eye on one of Guest Apartment rentals in the Latin Quarter for the trip I'm now planning. So I highly recommend them if you are still trying to make up your mind!
Cora, I'm glad to read your post. We have rented with them before but will be in Lilas for the first time in May of next year. And you're right, everyone in the office is so nice and helpful.
I was just looking at an apartment in the the 7th arrondissement and after reading this thread, I am not so sure that is where I want to be. This will be our (husband and myself) first trip to Paris. I do want to stay in an area where it is somewhat quiet, but has all those small shops and cafes you imagine when you think about Paris. What arrondissements should I consider?
Much thanks in advance for your suggestions!
The 5th and 6th arrondissements are what most people think of when they imagine what Paris is like. But you should do a GoogleWalk street view to check out the neighborhood, first - some streets will be crowded, busy and noisy.
Or, you could book a room at a nice hotel on Ile Saint Louis - there are 3 very charming -and very reasonably priced options - all on the one main street. You'll have the whole island to yourself in the evening, which is pretty special.
Melody, we enjoyed Lilas and I hope you will too. The bathroom was luxurious and large, and was probably my favorite thing! That and being able to look out the windows onto the street below and see people and activity while we ate our breakfast. Even though the bedroom faces the street, it is very quiet. The whole island is very quiet at night. The building the apartment is in is really nice inside and the elevator is huge (comparatively). I think you're going to like it very much.
Jane, I agree with what he said above about the Isle St. Louis. I loved staying there (3 times now). There are all the little shops and restaurants and it is so charming. Guest Apartment Service has a lot of nice apartments on this island. Some areas of the 6th are charming too, but some parts are a little too "chi chi" for me..... That said, I do really like many areas in the 5th and also there are some really cute areas in Le Marais, especially around the Place de Vosges (sp?).
Thank you so much Cora and Chexbres. Your input is very helpful . . . now just to decide!
De rien, Jane! I'm new here, but have already gotten some good tips so am happy to help out everyone else when i can!
We have rented an apartment in Paris in the 9th close to the Louve through Paristay but I booked it through Homeaway. So far so good, I'll report on it when we return October 17th. I have had to ask questions and you do have to prepay most of the apartments, which makes you a little nervous. My friend booked ours in Avignon though Homeaway also. For Paris ours was very reasonable as there are 4 of us going and it sleeps actually 6 and has two bathrooms a must for 4 ladies.
