Amsterdam to Paris in May

I am looking for suggestions on getting the most out of our one week in France. We will be traveling the second week in May from Amsterdam to Paris, using public transportation. My granddaughter’s main request is to see Mont Saint-Michel. This trip is a college graduation gift, and her first trip to Europe. We would also like to include Versailles & a dinner cruise on The Seine, on our last night. She is an anthropology major, therefore sites such as the catacombs interest her, yeah or nay?

On my previous trip to Paris, the Eiffel Tower was a huge disappointment due to the extremely long wait, suggestions on the best way to handle the experience or is there an alternative option for the city view.
Since we are quite flexible, all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If her main request is to see MSM, then you should do MSM the right way. The "wrong way" to do MSM is to try and do it as a day trip from Paris. While that's an option, it gets you an experience at MSM that leaves many disappointed. because....crowds, severe crowds. MSM is world famous. Package tours disgorge thousands of their customers on the doorstep of MSM every day. It's important to remember that MSM has one small, short, narrow street - that's it. During a few hours at mid-day, everyone squeezes in to that small space, and it's extremely crowded. But the crowds are only there from late morning to md-afternoon - the Day Tripper Hours. Before and after mid-day, the place isn't badly crowded. Early morning, and into the evening, the place is all but empty - and magical. The MSM of your dreams (or your granddaughter's dreams) is there, just not from 10 am to 4 pm.

The right way is to visit MSM is to spend the night there. Arrive late afternoon - maybe 3 to 4 pm - so you can watch the human tide recede, it will make you feel smart for being there "after hours." Spend the night on the Mont itself if you can (there are a few small, quirky hotels on the Mont, they are not 5-star luxurious, they are a bit overpriced for what you get, but what you get is location, location, location..). These rooms get snapped up quickly, so if you want to sleep on the Mont, try to get them ASAP. If you can't/chose not to sleep on the Mont itself, then at least sleep nearby on the mainland. Plan your trip around the crowded times. Enjoy a few crowd-free hours late afternoon and early evening, sleep, rise at dawn, and get out and enjoy MSM in the early morning hours.

IMHO a rental car is the best way to tour this area - MSM is spectacular and special, but there are a lot of other wonderful things in the region - Normandy and Brittany. If you don't want to drive in Paris (highly stressful and to be avoided) you can train in and out of Paris, pick-up and return your rental car in a city on the way to Normandy.

MSM is a magical, dreamy, wonderful place. You deserve to see it at its best, without crushing crowds. The way to do that is to spend the night there. Wake up early morning after sleeping on the Mont, wander its empty streets, it will be the perfect travel experience you have been dreaming of. You will not be disappointed. Please consider doing this - it's worth the extra time, money and effort.

Here is another way
Fly direct to Rennes from Amsterdam
Take the bus from Rennes to Mount St Michel.
Leaving you take a bus back Rennes where you can get the TGV train to Paris.
I am taking a 16 year old nephew to Paris in two weeks he also wants to see the catacombs; it is major tourist site.

Book reservations for the Eiffel Tower summit 60 days out to avoid long waits at the bottom -- you can't avoid elevator waits on the tower itself.

Book the Catacombs if you want to go -- let her decide that; it is very expensive to book ahead but waiting in line for 2 hours is pretty expensive too. I don't see that it has anything to do with anthropology but go if you feel like going.

Book reserved entry for Versailles or arrive by 8:30 to avoid one of the worst lines I have seen. In May they usually allow timed reservations on line.

Since this is 'her trip'. I would expect her to plan most of the activities in Paris.

If your granddaughter searches on this forum for Seine dinner she'll quickly learn that many people think eating on the river is not compatible with enjoying the view. I took their advice and enjoyed an hour on the Seine at sunset but ate in a restaurant afterwards. I wouldn't save it till the last night if there's any chance of rain.

It's pretty easy to spend a week in Normandy and another week in Paris and they're at least two hours apart, so with a trip of six or seven days she may decide to save MSM for another visit rather than losing part of two days getting there and back.

For the best view try the Arc de Triomphe. It's pretty similar to the view from the Eiffel Tower but you can see the Eiffel Tower.

I wrote a trip report of my week in Paris in 2018 which might give you an idea of how much can be packed into a day (just ignore the Notre Dame part, sniff, or substitute shopping if that's your thing): https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/april-in-paris-1e48a51b-4933-490e-9e0d-e8bdf1035b47

Have a great trip,
