What's the best way to travel to the coast?...planning a week. Trip highlights and places to stay enroute?

Staying in Amboise is best with a car, so I will assume you have one. The main route to the D-Day beaches area is via Le Mans (worth an overnight stay) and Falaise (several war-related sights); the countryside west of Alençon (Carrouges, Saint Léonard, Saint Ceneri...) is very pretty if you have more time.
If you do not have a car: train from Tours to Caen via Le Mans.

Thanks balso, Château de Carrouges and Saint-Céneri-le-Gerei look fantastic, that are the places I am looking for.
