5 nights in paris (Bastille day) with kids...where ?

Hi !

We will arrive from Montreal July 10 and we plan to stay 5 nights in paris with our kids ( 8 and 12 years old). We need a location that is safe, near a metro and that have some charm (Montmartre ?). Since we will be there on 14th july we could go see stuff related to bastille day (Parade ? Fireworks ? ) or maybe we have to avoid them for any reasons !

Thanks !

I can´t think of anywhere in Paris that is not safe, not near a métro (maybe rue Cler), and is void of charm.

Any hotel suggestion will be rather pointless without budget guidance. There are a number of hotels with quad rooms but price point is important.

The big parade down the Champs Elysées is in the morning and is concluded by a multi-aircraft flyover. There are special events throughout the day. The climax is the extensive fireworks display from the Eiffel Tower at nightfall, typically near 11 p.m.

Paris will be crowded but there is not really anything or anywhere specifically to avoid.

Thnaks !
We can also have an appartement (most of the time less expensive than an Hotel). We have 32 days of travel so we have to keep money for other places ! Something around 150-160 euro would be perfect. We can stretch that a bit if needed.

I wouldn't try to get anywhere close to the fireworks with kids that age. My adult friend (well traveled) almost had a panic attack it was so crowded.

I think you are on the low end for hotels, budget-wise. My experience is that larger rooms (quads) will run you considerably more in any convenient neighborhood. Try Booking.com to get an idea of price ranges for your needs. In the alternative, Google Maps has a setting to look for hotel prices in various areas of Paris. You may want to consider Air B&B or VRBO for an apartment rental, since you will be there for 5 nights. That would cut costs a bit.

hey hey bucephale

cross-pollinate.com read about the amenities and booking process.
booking.com put in your filters and see what's available
patiosdumarais.com
airbnb.com make sure they have the license number starting with 75,
we stayed out in the 14th arr across street from parc montsouris. it was a one bedroom/one bathroom with sofa bed, balcony, kitchenette, washer. found on trip advisor vacation rentals (quiet & central appt in front of parc montsouris) if interested. mom and son own it and son was great to deal with. you are on the low side with your budget, busy summer season, number of people staying in room. thru your determination you will find something and book early.
good luck finding something that suits you and your family.

Unless by stretched you mean almost doubled, your budget will probably/likely not work for a quad room in a hotel during this very busy time in Paris. I suggest you look for an apartment to stay in budget or close to budget. Be sure to get a place with a 13 digit registration number starting with 75. Booking.com is good for that because they list only legal rentals. Consider if you will need AC. That is not easy to find in apartments unless they are high end properties.
I see no reason to avoid the fireworks or parades unless someone in your group is prone to panic attacks. I took my children for the first time when they were 4 and 12 without any issues. My son continues to enjoy the display of tanks, etc. that is located on Avenue de l’Opera. You do not have to go to the Eiffel Tower to enjoy the fireworks. We have watched them a river cruise one year and from a bridge over the Seine one year.

After surviving the hottest day ever in Paris last August, I strongly recommend air conditioning, especially with sweaty kids. My area to stay is Place de la Repubique, which has the Canal St-Marin, complete with boat locks, for the kids to stroll. The plaza is always full of action, from skateboarders to ballroom dancers. Most important, its Metro station is served by five different lines which makes getting around the city very efficient.

Hi and thanks again !

jhk seems to think that I must double my daily budget (160 euro_ for lodging to get something. I cant believe that I need to pay at least 320 euro to find something clean, with AC and not too far from a metro station !

We usually like appartement, but a basic hotel, with AC and clean sheets would do the trick too !

The problem is not necessarily that the room rates are so high, but rather that quads are hard to come by and this is a very busy time of year. Try finding a decent room at a decent price in Washington D.C. over the 4th of July.

My experience with Parisian hotels is that they tend to have very small rooms that are not designed for families. No doubt, the farther you go from the central area, the better your chances. Go too booking.com, put in your filters, and see what shakes out.

Booking.com is finding 68 properties in Paris with an air-conditioned room costing no more than 200 euros per night for your time period, but the locations are not necessarily central. I don't know Paris, but I recognize a few of the areas as probably farther out than you'd want to be. When I add the "Paris City Center" filter, the number of hotels listed drops to 2, one of which is offering two twin-bedded rooms rather than one large room. The second hotel has a room with four twin beds available.

Going back to the full list covering all of Paris, some of the rooms have one regular bed and one sofa bed (I would not want that for 5 nights) or one regular bed and one bunk bed (might be fine).

Increasing the budget to 240 euros per night gets you 9 options in Paris City Center (as defined by booking.com).

All rates quoted above exclude some "taxes and charges". They vary by hotel from about 20 euros to about 60 euros for the entire stay, so including them will drive up the total cost by 4 to 12 euros per night.

I'd consider having the 12 yo and the 8 yo share their own, seperate hotel room but ideally adjoining (or at least on the same floor). This will greatly increase available options.

We often stay at a friends apartment in the 19e so when we looked for 2 adjoining, air conditioned hotel rooms, breakfast included, last summer we chose the Holiday Inn Express right on the Bassin de la Villette. It is near 3 metro stops and the Bassin has great free activities for families going on all summer. It worked out well for us and was within your budget for 2 rooms but our dates were the first week of August.

EDIT: It appears that mid July is a higher rate than August. Our rooms were 90€ per room in August 2019. Their mid July 2020 rate is about 125€. Also we called the hotel before we booked to be assured that we’d get adjoining rooms, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds which they were able to do. We prefer a canal side room.

Mona’s post makes sense, as August is the lowest price all year for hotel rooms in Paris.

I did not say doubled. I said almost doubled. To me stretched is 10% or so more than the base and I do not think you will find a quad room in the center in July for 176€. Almost doubled would get you to 260€ and that will give you some choices, including getting 2 rooms at someplace like Hotel Diana in the 5th. The price of hotel rooms in Paris in July and general scarcity of quad rooms there are the reasons I think apartments might be a better option for you if you want a good location within your budget. Odds are that you will not have AC in an apartment but the location and space might offset that. Ultimately, I believe that you can find a place for around 200€ but something will have to give, be it AC, location, or space. Bear in mind that you are traveling to one of the top ten most visited cities in the world during peak season. As someone else noted, this is like going to Washington DC during the week of July 4th.
Edit: My brother stayed here https://www.eurocheapo.com/paris/hotel/hotel-au-royal-cardinal-paris.html a few years ago and "liked" it or as he says liked it for what it is. He is a big fan of the Euro Cheapo website for finding his hotels so the link I posted is from that site.

Here is a link to one of my favorite "below the radar" well priced hotels in Paris: https://www.paris-hotel-des-nations-st-germain.com/en/quadruple-room/. I think you can get two doubles there for around 240€, if you prepay and can accept non-cancellable reservations. I have not stayed there. I stayed almost directly across the street but I scoped the place out and have suggested it to many others and so far (knock wood) no one has complained to me about the choice.
