Heiriger in vienna

I'm hoping to get recommendations for a good heuriger in Vienna in September. Somewhere with good food and not too difficult to get to. We are staying on the Graben pedestrian area. Suggestions on locations and transport greatly appreciated.

I have a few ideas for you - places that can take you into the vineyards with beautiful views and with easy transport.

  1. Stammersdorf - This village within the city limits of Vienna is what Grinzing used to be (please don't spoil it RS folks). Getting there is easy - take Tram 31 from Schottenring all the way to the end then walk up Stammersdorferstrasse to the Stammersdorfer Kellergasse. Stammersdorferstrasse is the village's main street and includes very well known Heurigen with beautiful gardens like Heuriger Wieninger. The Kellergasse is a lane that was originally lined with the kellers (wine cellars) for storage. Heurigen have now transformed these kellers into outdoor wonderlands, with amazing views over vineyards towards the city. A good example is Heuriger Zur Christl.

  2. Nussdorf - Another village that is now part of Vienna, this area is the end station of Tram D, which you can catch anywhere on the Ring, but best from Schottentor for your location. My favorite heurigen in the city is at the end of this line - Scheubel Auer - which has good food and a lovely garden but no view.

  3. Grinzingerstrasse (not Grinzing) - Take the U4 subway line to the end of Heiligenstadt. From there, take the 38A bus. There are two really great Heurigen after a couple of stops on the bus. First is Mayer am Pfarrplatz (Beethoven lived here I believe) and the other is Feuerwehr Wagner (such a lovely garden and good food, kind of magical when you enter).

  4. Kahlenberg - Using the directions in #3, continue with bus 38A all the way to the top of Kahlenberg and exit at the parking lot. Follow signs for Stadtwanderweg 1, a city walking path that will take you through lovely woods and vineyards. Stop at Mayer am Nussberg, Sirbu, or Wieninger am Nussberg. These are notably Buschenschanks, not Heurigen - an even more local experience. It means that these have no hot food, but absolutely scrumptious nibbles like pretzels, cold cuts, cheese and fresh horseradish.

  5. Heuriger 10er Marie - the oldest Heuriger in Vienna and probably the easier one to reach from the Graben. Take the U3 subway line from Stephansplatz to the end station of Ottakring. This heuriger is about a 8-9 minute walk from there.

Thanks for the expanded list Emily. We are going to be in Vienna again in August for a month and will try some of these Heuringen too!

Tourists are everywhere and in great numbers, so would suggesting venues but hoping such don't become overcrowded...counterproductive?
