Beer tours

I just spent the weekend in Bamberg and Kulmbach. Bamberg is a lovely city all by itself, but 10 breweries puts it into a very special class. Perfect small, very old village feel build around and over a beautiful river. Kulmback also has a great little town center with great restaurants, and impressive schloss above, and five very nice breweries.

We are headed there in June. Can you give any more info on the breweries you visited and your impressions? Did you have a car?

Gotta try the rauchsbier (smoked beer) for which the brewers of Bamberg are noted. Also, in December, if you want to visit a wonderful Christkindlmarkt without the insanity of Nuremberg, Bamberg has one that's authentic and fun in Maximilian Platz.

I once went to Bamberg by mietfahrgelegenheit as I was an au-pair in Frankfurt. And tasted Rauchbier. Well, it was quite strange. As if drinking beer and eating some bologna and drinking beer at the same time

I had a car but in Bamberg but did not use it in town. I took a trip out to Kulmbach which was great, but always check with DB. If there are trains they make life much easier. If you really want to hit the "exotic" old monastery breweries, a car is probably required.

@ celeste, I hit all the breweries in town that I could walk to and enjoyed them all. Have a search on Youtube, The Beer Hunter is good. Up in Kolsh land you can get 0.2s and drink all day. In Bavaria with the bigger servings, you have to hike between pubs.

Yeah, we are staying in Wurzburg and day tripping to Bamberg. I figured train would be in order so as to avoid driving. :)
Any favorites within walking distance of the center?
