Will this US-->UK Plug Adaptor be okay?

There was a long discussion about 2 months ago which included lots of information on the right kind of plug adaptor to use from US products to UK receptacles. One particularly recommended is the Go Travel Visitor UK that covers other countries as well.

I found this US source for Go Travel products, but it doesn't have that particular adaptor. It has this USA Visitor one. What this one seems to be lacking is the Kitemark or CE marks and shutters.

Do you think this product would work okay, in spite of its lacks? Or should I wait and buy one there? If I wait, and I arrive on 2 May, a bank holiday, will I be able to purchase one at LHR?

As of today, the only device I will have is my mobile phone, which has worked well using a typical European plug adaptor in Italy, Greece and Istanbul.

Most LHR stores have been open when I arrived on bank holidays in the past.

I use the $1 adaptor plugs (continental Europe and UK versions) available from the Rick Steves' online store. They appear to be well made and solid and I never had any issues with any of my electrical devices anywhere in Europe while using these plugs. I just don't see the value of the more expensive adaptor plugs since all they need to do is pass the small amount of electrical current a cell phone or laptop computer needs. If I were using higher amperage devices, then I might look for a more robust plug.

I use the $1 ones from here, as well. Or you can buy one at Wal-Mart or Target. You will also be able to find them at LHR.

We also used the $1 adapter from RS. We spent 5 weeks in England and Scotland and they worked perfect!

UK adaptors should NOT have the CE mark on them incidentally. If they do it is a sign that it is probably poorly made or counterfeit.

Regarding the GO products, this is the one you want, but it looks kind of expensive compared with what is sold within the UK under the Go brand and elsewhere. Not sure if this is shipped out as the site keeps redirecting me to the UK version.

A reminder from the other discussion about what to avoid in adaptors:
Unfused
Live/neutral pins unsleeved
Live/neutral pins very close to the outside of the plastic case
Socket unshuttered
Accept earthed plugs without an earthed connection (only plastic)

Rick's $1 UK plug adaptors work perfectly. I've been in the UK 3 weeks now and have used them daily without any difficulty. I'll be in France next and expect that Rick's $1 France adaptor will work just as well.

Buy an adaptor designed for the UK. Rick's current one for $1 isn't on a number of counts. It isn't sleeved and it isn't fused - clear from the picture of the back.

It may work - the $1 one - but it won't protect you or the device.

The electricity is much higher voltage here, and although it sounds like it is the same as France or Italy it isn't - because of the much different wiring regulations here to North America or Europe.

It sounds silly but there is a reason that plugs have switches here, and items plugged into the wall need fuses.

Lo, I was thinking about you today. I stopped in at an AAA store today just to browse (it's 90 miles away so I stop in when in the neighborhood, lol. Fortunately it is in the same shopping plaza as the Wild Birds Unlimited store and I needed bird food!). They did have the sleeved/grounded plugs for UK and Europe as well as the ungrounded ones. The grounded ones for UK and Europe were $7.95 each with the AAA discount. UK was $9.95 without the discount and the Europe one was $8.95. If you've got an AAA near you, it's worth stopping by to see what they have in their inventory. It did take some looking to find the grounded ones as they were on a different side of the display.

Thanks for the primary research, Pam. We have 2 AAA's here and we are members. I called the one we normally go to and the guy I talked to was totally clueless. We went to the one closest to where we were in town at the time and they had nothing like you describe. They suggested a luggage/travel store nearby where they had everything like that. The store had nothing like that.

Next time we're in town (it's only an hour drive to the center of town for us) I'll check at our usual AAA with the clueless guy and see if they indeed do have what you described. BTW, was your store in Boise or Spokane?

Actually, laughing, it was Coeur d'Alene. There used to be an AAA store in Lewiston ID which is close to me but it closed a few years ago. The one in CdA has a small-ish store area while the one in Spokane usually has more selection. But...more traffic to get to the AAA in Spokane and I wasn't going in that direction. Boise is a 6 hr drive, so too far to drop in to. The plugs were all in the plastic encased packaging hanging on racks. Hope you find what you need!

Happened to notice a rack of visitor adapters in my local Tesco this morning @ £2.35. Just a price guide ...

I bought another grounded UK Plug Adapter at the airport on my way to London this year. It appears to have all the essential attributes, such as shutters, sleeved pins and it's also fused. It was about C$10 which is about the same price as some of the others shown in this thread (once the currency exchange is taken into account).

I've encountered this type of accessory in many any airports, and you shouldn't have any trouble finding one before you arrive in the U.K.
