The cheapest nicest hotels in London

Wasleys recently posted an article by Conde Nast about undiscovered gems in Wales. While I was reading it, the link to this article caught my eye. It's a list of interesting and inexpensive hotels in London. The cheapest starts at £56 a night and the most expensive is £180. The photos and descriptions make the places sound very interesting and unique. I'm holding onto this article for future reference, but thought I would post it here in case anyone else is interested.

What an great article. Lots of very cool looking places. Really interesting locations too.

Dalston, Wood Green, Bethnal Green and Spitalfields are all of particular interest to me, A couple of places mentioned are in my home borough. You're really going to get the feeling of being in the heart of London life in those places. The travel to the central London sights is going to be 45 minutes or so but Dalston is well connected with two Overground stations and a multitude of buses linking to the rest of the network.

Speaking of Dalston and Wood Green, they are great to visit to try Turkish food. Outside of Berlin maybe, Dalston, Stoke Newington and Wood Green (Green Lanes) are the best places to eat Turkish in Europe. I'm surprised the author found it difficult to find breakfast in Wood Green. There's many little Turkish cafes on Green Lanes serving breakfast. All will serve a full English breakfast as well as a Turkish breakfast. I can't name everything in a Turkish breakfast, but there's feta cheese, olives, sausage and meats and a whole host of other tasty stuff. It's a great alternative to an English fried breakfast.

Thanks, Mardee. I’m already turning my thoughts to 2025 since I’ve got 3 trips locked in for ‘24. I’m thinking Oxford and London in February-early March.

Gerry, that definitely sparks my interest! I love Turkish food. Eating was one of my most favorite things to do in Turkey and the Turkish breakfasts were out of this world. A few other items I thought of to add to your list are tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh fruit, sheep cheese, and wonderful Turkish bread! The bread was so good. Now I will look even closer at the places you mentioned. Thanks!

Lyndash, that sounds wonderful! I'm heading to London with two of my grandkids in 2025, but it probably won't be until April.

Mardee, thanks; great article! All very interesting places. I am tempted to stay at the one in Spitalfields, to be near Spitalfields Market for great food options.
Also looking at the place in Paddington area for convenience in exploring the Regents Canal area.

Nice find! I’m intrigued by several and have always fancied staying in Chiswick. The hotel featured is equidistant from the Thames paths and Turnham Green Tube stop right on the high street.

I stayed at the hotel mentioned near Paddington ("Pilgrm") in August with a friend & we were both very happy with it. I'd never stayed in that part of London before – I mostly stay near City Hall or in Holborn. I could see Paddington Station from my window (which opened), and there was a nice BIG metal fan in the room (very helpful for the heat wave).

It's a funky old hotel with many little passageways and stairs, which I like. The neighborhood is not as dead quiet as Holborn, but I have to say, the proximity to Paddington Station was very helpful when getting to LHR my last day. My friend heard about this hotel in TimeOut London.

Rebecca, I was thinking the same thing. It would be fun to stay close to Spitalfield and be close enough for those early morning visits there.

Mona, Chiswick would be a cool place to stay!

Laura, that's interesting and good to know! I was thinking about the convenience, too, since I will be taking the train several times from Paddington Station. I might look at some of these places for next year.

Mona,

Chiswick is lovely. I chose the Premier Inn which is blocks from the Thames River Path and a good 15-25 minute stroll to the High Street and Turnham Green tube station.

I’m a walker so loved the relatively isolated location of the PI. The charming Devonshire and George pub ( associated with the adjacent Fuller’s brewery ) is located across the road. There’s a brightly lit underground path that comes out right next to the pub. Great, comfortable pub.

A wonderful find off the river path heading towards Hammersmith bridge was Marie’s Delicatessen. Great coffee and pastries. Believe they also serve other meals. Emphasis on Italian food.

I also encourage you to take the Underground from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway. 20 minutes ride.

Then stroll to Pho, a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant which 5 minutes from the station.

No matter where I stay in London I set aside time to return to Pho.

Claudia we’ve house exchanged for 3 weeks in Ealing near Pitshanger Rd and have taken a walk in Chiswick after a Thames walk. We knew the high street in Chiswick would be charming and the Turnham Green tube stop with 2 good lines is very nice. That’s why I’d really like to go back to Chiswick. Thanks for the specific recommendations. Another time we did a 3 week exchange in Twickenham and often found ourselves in Richmond after a Thames walk. As we’ve gone back in recent years I’ve enjoyed reading your recommendations about this area too. We like staying in a central area of London when time is short but love staying in some of these charming neighborhoods when we can.

Mardee, I really appreciate this article. We are going to London for a shorter stay, probably less than a week, this summer and we haven’t picked our hotel yet…

Laurie Beth, yeah, mine, too (when I'm not booking PIs to save money). 🤣
