London Tube on strike next week?

We're flying to London on Tuesday, and were planning on using the Tube extensively, including getting from Heathrow to Victoria Station upon arrival. I just got notice that there may be a Tube strike beginning at 9 pm on Monday and lasting until Friday. Does anyone have any experience or tips on being in London without the Tube running?

Confirming that the Tube will be on strike and not operating, starting Monday May 5 9pm until Thursday May 8 9pm. Then (apparently, from news report) will apparently resume normal service on May 9, so apparently no problem using the Tube starting May 9.

The locals know the situation best so look at their posts.

Based on news reports (Google the News option of Google, Tube Strike), other options such as trains, buses and taxis, have been overloaded by several million London commuters trying to find alternative means of transport to work.

Tourist problems seem to have been largely forgotten in the general chaos.

Good luck in this tough situation. Should be more or less normal starting May 9.

On last week's experience, expect the Piccadilly Line to run from Heathrow Central to Acton Town, and the District to run from Acton eastwards. Note that Heathrow Terminal 5 & 4 stations were closed.

Check out the www.tfl.gov.uk for information on the extent of the service that they expect to run next week.
During this week's strikes they ran approximately 50% of the service and 80% of stations were open (per information in email I received from tfl that they send to registered Oyster card users).
I used the tube on one of the strike days this week, arrived in central London (using national rail) just at the end of the rush hour and didn't have any problems getting around using the tube.

Wouldn't like to use the tube in the rush hour on a strike day but apart from a slightly longer interval (5 minutes instead of 2/3 minutes in my experience) between trains I think its mostly manageable.

We're arriving on Thurs., so we'll hit the last day of the strike. I had my tube routes all worked out and decided I'd better check some alternate routes. I've been watching posts here and on TripAdvisor. You might want to post your hotel on this website and TA for suggestions on best routes to your hotel. You can go on the tfl website and they'll do trip options using both buses and tube. Their website will also tell you which stations are closed on which lines. If you do the trip planning option, be sure to hit the "details" button as that will tell you the direction you want to go. The stops are listed in order on the tube signs, but with buses you need to know the end stop so you know if you're going the right direction. Because the U.K.runs on the opposite side of the street, getting the correct bus always throws me a little.

On the more interesting side, during the last strike 40 or so historic buses were brought back into service on the 2, 15, 29, 38 and 205 routes, probably as publicity. So you may have a rare opportunity of riding on a bus from the 1940s or 1950s.
