Heathrow Express - what time?

Thanks to all for the great advice offered in my previous post
https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/england/recommended-car-service-to-heathrow

We have decided to take Heathrow Express- just bought the tix with the 14 day discounted price- wish I had made this decision earlier- but oh well.

Our flight is actually at 9:50 (I had that wrong in other post). Aer Lingus to Dublin, Terminal 2. We will be checking bags
Plan is to take a cab from our hotel (near Earl's Court, above Cromwell Road) to Paddington and catch the 6:25 Heathrow Express, getting us to LHR by 6:40. That is just 3 hours preflight time- is that going to be OK?

What time would you recommend getting into a cab? I'm guessing 5:30? I know uber is also an option but we are not uber users (yet) and from what I can tell the cost diff is just a few pounds.

Thanks again

Is there any reason why you are not just getting on the Piccadilly Line (tube) at Earls Court? First train just before 0600, arrives LHR around 0628. Cheaper, quicker, direct and easier.

From your other post I gather that these times are in the morning -- ? If so, you shouldn't need a cab as early at 5:30 from Cromwell Rd to Paddington. I'd say 6:00 would be ample, even with the few minutes it will take from the cab to the Heathrow Express platform. Helpful though to call the cab ahead of time at that early hour.

Three hours should be plenty of time between arriving at Heathrow and your flight.

Three hours is fine, especially if you check in online the day before.

Next time, if you stay near Earls Court, consider the tube. It is faster than a taxi plus the Heathrow Express and much cheaper.

I should probably explain- I *thought * our flight was at 8:50 AM- the first direct Piccadilly to LHR at 5:58 would get us there 6:36- that is too late- just over 2 hours preflight- so I booked a car service.

A few people here mentioned traffic delays, roadwork, accidents, etc and that got me worried about getting to LHR on time with the car service--so I decided to take Heathrow Express- bought the tickets.

Then I realized flight is actually at 9:50- so my mistake- we could have taken tube- too late now- I have the train tix. And we will be sure to enjoy that ride ;)

Thanks- we'll aim to be in cab 5:45.

Did anyone mention that when the HEx is disrupted the only option is to go by underground (or taxi I suppose) - nothing else is put on offer.

All forms of transport have a possibility of disruption, but from Earls Court early in the morning I would have listed the underground and car service as broadly equal first options to pick between (depending on other things) and taking a cab to Paddington + HEx as a distant third place. YMMV though.

When you get up that morning, check to make sure the Heathrow Express is running without problems. These do occur. If so, have a backup plan.

You don't want to get to Paddington only to find the HE isn't running. It's rare, but it happens. Just like the other day, the Piccadilly line through central London was not operating.

Thanks Frank II

Geesch- I know it's my own fault for making this way more complicated than it needed to be. Fingers crossed HEX is up and running. If not we'll take the tube!

Curious- If HEX is not running I suppose there would be no way to get ticket refunded?
