I am hoping someone has suggestions as I am also interested in such things and have not really found a reliable source on my 4 trips to London. There was a wonderful vendor in one of the stalls in Portobello Road that I looked forward to visiting every time--vintage buttons and trims--but when I was just there I was sorry to see the stall is now occupied by another dealer. My most favorite place on earth is the 3rd floor of Liberty, full of their glorious fabric and lots of buttons and other craft goodies.

Agree! I loved Liberty but have to laugh……when I was there years ago I got to the fabric floor….told the clerk I sewed and did ENGLISH SMOCKING…..she did not know what I was talking about! HA!

Oh my goodness, Jane! My mother and grandmother used to do smocking on the dresses they made for my sister and me! You are quite talented to be doing smocking! And I can't believe the woman in Liberty had not heard of smocking! She must be very young...not our generation.

I was also going to suggest Portobello Road Market. I was there on a Saturday and saw a wide variety of things being offered. Among these were dealers of vintage clothing, scraps of lace, and a variety of antique buttons. The vintage clothing (and antique lace) could be cut into strips to incorporate into quilts.

There are also tables of antique china, tea sets and platters. Be prepared to be tempted by these, as I was.

You will also find standard items such as T-shirts, totes, backpacks with "London" printed on them at Portobello Road Market, in case you are looking for items to take home as gifts for friends and family.
