We have a 3 night stopover in Copenhagen before a 3 week trip in Holland to visit family and friends. Is it possible to buy a SIM card in Copenhagen that will also work in Holland? Or should I forget about a SIM card for 2 1/2 days in Copenhagen and just use hotel wifi and wait to purchase a SIM card til I get to Holland?
We will be in Copenhagen on 5 May which is Common Prayer Day (Store Bededag). I understand that there will be some closures but that the National Museum will be open. I also read that the holiday observance may be discontinued in the future which leads me to think that there may not be many closures. Any info about closures?
Thanks, in advance, for postings with info!
Do you need a phone or are you just looking for data? If data, I would suggest getting an eSIM data plan. It eliminates the need to find a physical SIM card and is very easy to install. The catch is that your phone must be unlocked. I spent a month in Germany and 3 nights in Copenhagen and used Airalo to get eSIMs. You can get one that can be used all over Europe or you could get one for the Netherlands and one for Denmark.
My trip to Copenhagen was somewhat last minute and I had already bought my Germany eSIM (30 days of 10Gb data for $20) so I had to buy a separate one for Denmark for the 3 nights. I think it cost me $5 for 7 days, which was the lowest I could get. I preferred to have one in Copenhagen since I planned to be sightseeing so much and needed Google maps for getting around and other stuff. Your needs may vary.
You can find more info about eSIMs on this thread and on the Technology Tips forum.
Thanks for the response, Mardee. I have an iPhone; I only need data. Yes, my phone is unlocked. I purchased and successfully used SIM cards in Portugal and in Colombia within the last year. I, too, like to use Google maps and would prefer to have internet access while in Copenhagen. I'll take a look at the links you posted to learn more about eSIMs. BTW, I read the Copenhagen days on your travel forum and have made notes of the places that look like they'd be of interest to us - thanks!
The parliament have discontinued Store Bededag as a public holiday from 2024. That means 5th of May 2023 will be the last Store Bededag, and the public holiday closures will still apply on this day. Most stores will be closed, but most museums and attractions will be open.
Thanks broccolihaar! Yes, I read that the holiday is being discontinued. Hopefully, all of the tourist-type places will be open as well as restaurants.
The touristy places will be open - but if you want to go shopping, you'll need to do that another day.
Thanks, broccoihaar!

Oh, I'm glad it helped! I really enjoyed Copenhagen!
Hi Mardee - would you say that we could merely walk everywhere in Copenhagen for the short time we'll be there? We don't have any issues walking (even tho we're older!). We don't want to visit the Viking Museum outside of Copenhagen or anyplace else outside the city. We really only have 2 full days. We also have the afternoon we arrive (after a nap from a night flight) and a full morning our last day before our 5 pm flight to Holland. Another question - your travel report tells of your evening in Tivoli. Was that enough time for your visit? We don't plan on the rides, but it seems like it's a place you HAVE to see,
Copenhagen is very walkable (weather permitting), quite beautiful and enjoyable. Visited last September and walked quite a bit - 15 plus miles a couple of days. Since I was there for a full week I (we) also used the Copenhagen Card because of the unlimited transportation and limited attractions associated.
Thnx for the response, raymonelee! I think we’ll be there too short to benefit from the Copenhagen Card but will look into it.
Mardee - don’t know if you saw my question or not:

Sorry, SEAsiaTraveler, I must have missed it. Yes, I felt like it was plenty of time. I got there around 6pm, I think, and got something to eat first of all. Then I just started walking around - I wanted to stay until dark so that I could see all the beautiful lights come on, which I did! It was just gorgeous. Mostly I people-watched and saw some of the fun exhibits they have there - definitely some quirky things that you won't see elsewhere. :) No rides, so there was plenty of time to look at everything. I just loved it. I grabbed a glass of wine at some point and went to watch the Commedia dell'Arte production, which was so much fun!
Towards the end, I did a little window shopping in the gift shop then went to a pastry shop inside the park called Cakenhagen and had the most wonderful and beautiful pastry with a cappuccino. It was really a magical night - don't miss it if you can help it.
Thanks sooo much for your description, Mardee! And with it staying light so late and I believe it’s open til 11 pm, we’ll have plenty of time for an evening visit.
Oh yes, definitely! Have a wonderful trip!
I second the use of an Airalo esim for data AND cake at Cakenhagen!
