Best way to get from Copenhagen to Oslo - train or ferry?

Hi fellow travelers!

I'm planning a trip to Copenhagen with my daughter for May of this year. We'd like to spend at least a day or two visiting Oslo from Copenhagen. Is there a preferred way to travel from there to Oslo? I'm seeing either the train or ferry as the two main options, but not sure what the pros/cons are for each of them. Is one more noticeably more scenic than the other? More costly? Faster? We're not opposed to traveling during the night, either. Any advice folks have is appreciated.

I went in the opposite direction - After a week in Oslo , We took the overnight DFDS ferry to Copenhagen . I would do that again in a heartbeat

I've taken the ferry. It was suggested that I get up early and go outside for the final hour or two into Oslo for the views. It was worth getting up early.

I'll be taking the train this spring but making overnight stops along the way.

There are no direct trains, and most iteneraries will have to transfer in Göteborg (possibly Malmö and Göteborg). The scenery was described on another thread earlier today, I think you will find that response useful.

The ferry is an overnight service. With a total journey time of almost 18 hours it is not a fast way to travel, but since you sleep onboard the journey does not feel as long. Besides, if speed was your main priority, you would probably have chosen to fly anyway. The ferry is a mini cruise, so there are things to do onboard. Not a "big" cruise, it is a "mini" cruise. The views, especially of the Oslo Fjord in the morning (in direction towards Oslo) are quite nice. Not out of this world beauty, but still quite scenic.

If you have the time, I would recommend the ferry. It is a nice way to travel, and not something you can do everywhere.

You can compare ticket prices on SJ's website (trains) and DFDS' website (ferry).

The train is faster, but the ferry is a more efficient use of your time since it travels overnight. And there are some scenic parts with each mode, like the Oslo fjord as mentioned. But the departure from Copenhagen and trip through Öresund is also not that bad.

Thank you all for this information! It's quite helpful. Sounds like the ferry is the way to go.

Go on the ferry. So many people have praised it that I am on the brink of doing it myself, even though I live next door and don't even want to revisit Oslo at the moment.
