Welcome to this newsboard with your first post. Your simple enough question raises a host of issues, most related to our needing more information.

Month of year? European travel experience? Car rental in Italy experience? Number of guests? Age group? Where are you coming from before the Castellammare stay? Are you interested in Pompeii, Vesuvuius, Positano, or Capri (just mentioning some very popular visits, not telling you what to do.)

You have chosen a seldom-mentioned suburb of Naples for your one night. Are you aware that there is very famous Roman villa right there? How did you select that location? Have you checked on ZTL designations there? Honestly, except for a nice cliffside view, Sorrento is not a "landmark" of Italy. They close several streets every night for the Passeggiata, and I would expect parking there to be difficult, and "paid."

While I think Vesuvius is a waste of time, many outdoorsy people demand to slog through the ashes for the (... only way) hike to the top. And a car might make this easy, but I don't know how much space there is in the highest (far from the top) parking lot. Some people want to see the art and architecture in Naples.

For us, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, and Positano/Amalfi/Ravello were important excursions, but each of those takes almost a full day. Heat and sun exposure are big factors from May to September. There is virtually "NO" available street parking on the Amalfi Coast (that last-listed group of three towns), and the pay parking lots we saw from our car-and-driver excursion were pretty darned small.

If you are willing to do the research, these topics are frequently discussed here, and the Search box top left, in blue, is very effective.

Drive along the famous Amalfi Coast Road to Amalfi which is a good town to have a lunch before driving back to Sorrento.

Hi Deb -
I'm trying to put together your larger plan based on your previous post on 4/4. In that one you'd posted that you were driving from Naples> Sorrento in the mid afternoon of June 11 for the night, Then Sorrento> the Amalfi Coast with a night in Salerno on the 12th, and then driving to Bari where you needed to be there by 1:00 (13:00) to board a cruise on the 13th.

So it looks like your plan is now to drive from Naples (are you flying into Naples Capodichino?) to Castellammare Di Stabia on June 11th, staying there the evenings of the 11th and 12th, and driving to Bari on the 13th. Correct?

You might think about parking the car when you arrive in Castellammare and do any exploring by that cheap, bare-bones commuter rail (Circumvesuviana), thus avoiding a host of issues already presented related to getting around this VERY busy area by car. As time had mentioned, Pompeii is usually the #1 must-do in this region, and easily reached by that aforementioned train: will take under 20 minutes. From there, if you still have the energy, you could head on down on to Sorrento via that same train: should take about 40 minutes. Or hire a private driver.

But while we enjoyed our stay in Sorrento, I don't know as there's anything there that's considered a must-do at all; it's just a very convenient transport base for regional SITA buses, ferries and (between Naples and Sorrento) Circumvesuviana trains. That has a bit of a reputation for its lack of creature comforts and having to keep a tight rein on one's valuables but many, many people use it successfully, tourists and locals alike. As you would be day-tripping without luggage to keep eyes on, you'd be ahead of the game.

Alternately you could take the funicular up Monte Faito in Castellammare for the view, and/or book an archeological tour of the villas of ancient Stabiae (hopefully someone has some firsthand info on those). Still, what you choose to do will depend on your group's (3 ladies, unless that has changed) interests. Help us out ????

I'll assume you've done your homework regarding the ins-and-outs of driving in Italy?
