small town Czechia/driving

Hi all,

Planning at trip for late September--early October. It won't surprise many to learn that our itinerary is: Prague (3 nights)-->??? (3 nights)--->Vienna (3 nights)-->Bratislava (1 night, my husband is very keen on this)--> Budapest (3 nights).

In between Prague and Vienna, we have 3 nights set aside for small town/countryside exploration. My questions for the forum:

  • What small city or town would you base out of in southern Czechia? We are interested in hiking, relaxed biking (easy, well-marked cycling on paths/roads I should say. NOT mountain biking or 20+ mile days), history, and slowing down a bit. Not very interested in wineries. Slavonice draws my attention at this point.

  • What town(s) do you recommend for rental car pickup/return?

  • What information can I give my husband to ease his concerns about driving in Czechia? He has driven in Provence and in rural Mexico. I think he's most nervous about the our lack of Czech language skills and therefore worried re: navigation. (We get international data and have used GPS on prior trips, so I think this is mostly in his head). Tell me about something wonderful that would be difficult to access via public transit!

Also, beyond starting in Prague and ending in Budapest, the itinerary is quite flexible at this point. So if you have suggestions of another small town/city in a different region that is perfect for slowing down and getting outdoors, I'm all ears.

Bonus question: if you have personal experience with any small group tours in any of these destinations, please share! (I know RS has recs in the guidebooks, but if you have a personal experience, I'd love to hear it from you, too). I love a tour guide who weaves together a cohesive narrative. Prefer small groups, and I'd rather pay upfront for a guide in a small group than join a larger "pay what you want" tour.

Can I assume you will be renting the car in Czechia and returning it in Czechia? Not renting in Prague and dropping it in Budapest, which would be hugely expensive.

We spent 3 nights in Slavonice. Two days was probably more time than we needed but it was a very relaxing time. It’s not a big place. We enjoyed walking around. We didn’t bike but it looked like there were nice biking options in the area. We used public transport for our trip so I can’t help you with your car questions.

We were there last summer.

marcw, thank you for linking that post! i'll head over.

Sam, yes, you assume correctly. Picking up and dropping off in Czechia. Could be outside of Prague, if folks think the drive from Prague to the south is a good use of time. Or could be after taking public transit to the south. We do not want to drive in the historic center or any other dense and difficult to navigate parts of Prague.

Eef, oh that's good to hear you visited Slavonice and enjoyed your time! Glad to know that Slavonice was doable by public transit if necessary. Did you take any side trips to explore other towns/sites in the region or did you mainly stay put in Slavonice?

As you plan out your driving tour stay flexible to the idea of more time driving the Czech Rep, another night in Vienna and sikpping Budapest this time. Its your stretch in the plans and you seem most keen on the driving part.

Just on the driving in Czechia part. If you approach a signposted junction and you see the yellow square sign then you have the right of way. If you see the yellow square with the black line through it then you give way. If there are no posted signs or road markings then we have a "give way to the right" rule. Follow posted speed limits, allow 2 metres when overtaking bikes, drive with headlights on even during the day.

Mr. E, thank you for the suggestion! Originally this trip was just meant to be Czechia/Hungary so we may actually consider saving Vienna for another trip.

Jason, those are really practical tips, thank you! That's the kind of thing that will help us feel more confident driving in Czech Republic.

It's looking like car rental is very affordable and practical picking up at Prague main train station and dropping off in Ceske Budejovice. And that connections from Ceske Budejovice to Vienna are pretty simple (1 change in Ceske Velenice... assuming Vienna is still on the table). If anyone has any advice for/against doing this, I'd be happy to hear it.

Between Vienna and Prague I would suggest Brno and its surrounding countryside in Moravia.

In the summer of 2016 I did a day trip by train from Vienna to Brno , then on to the small village of Slavkov, did likewise the following summer in 2017.....lovely countryside, should have gone on to Olomouc ,

Bottom line: not only super historical but lovely places.
