Prague for a month

My husband and I are thinking of doing a month in Prague from mid Sept to mid Oct. Would love feedback as to whether there is enough to do there . Suggestions for side trips and in general just thoughts on this idea. We are in our late 70's so we like the idea of having a base for a period of time.

The classic tourist activities within Prague might use up 4 days if you move slow; and if you assume that most tourists miss half what there is, then its 8 days. So, yes rent a car and do a lot of road trips. There are beautiful castles and villages throughout the country.

Every destination has those people who fell in love with it so as to not discount that, if you fall in love with Prague you can spend 2 months and not get bored.

Prague is a beautiful city. My special interests--which include art, 20th-century history and architecture, especially Art Nouveau--align very well with what Prague offers. I'll be returning this year after a much-too-short visit in 2018. I think I'll probably need 10-14 days. My sightseeing list has about 30 places I want to go inside (museums, churches, etc.), perhaps 10 gardens of varying sizes and over 130 buildings whose exteriors (mainly Art Nouveau) I want to walk by. It helps that I saw a few of the museums back in 2018.

Workable side trips from Prague include the Nazi camp at Terezin, Tabor and Kutna Hora (bone church and some other sights). Many people like to go to Cesky Krumlov, which I guess can be done in one day if you must, though probably via a commercial shuttle rather than public transportation. However, Cesky Krumlov is just one of many pretty towns down near the Austrian border. I'd suggest taking some days from Prague and setting up camp somewhere down there so you can see quite a few of the small, pretty towns in the area without needing a lot of transportation back and forth from Prague. I imagine there are bus-tour options from Prague to other interesting locations.

I believe public transportation in Prague is free for those over 70.

There is absolutely enough to do for a month if you include side trips. Two years ago we spend the month of May in Prague, staying in a 2-bedroom apartment in the Zizkov area. We had side trips to Nizbor (crystal factory), Brno, Olomouc, Berlin--oh so many castles and history. We also wanted to go to the northern area of Bohemia and to Vienna but actually ran out of time!!

The "slow travel" allowed us to really, really see the city, rather than race around and check things off a list.

If you want any more details, feel free to ask.

Carol, I am traveling to Prague next week and I plan to tour the crystal factory. Is it difficult to see where to switch trains in Beroun? How did you like the tour?

Pearzee , As I recall, switching trains in Beroun was fine. In fact, on our way to Nizbor, there was a temporary bus substitution in the morning due to track work, and we managed to catch the right bus. The train between Beroun and Nizbor (at least when we were there) is only one train car!

We first went on the tour about three years ago on our first trip to Prague. It was fascinating. There is one young woman who is an English speaker who gave us the tour. We were the only two on the tour. We returned the following year to buy some more crystal. The area is of special interest to my husband as a great-great-grandfather emigrated from near there. It turned out that his small town was also where the husband of one of the showroom clerks was born.

Thank you, Carol! I’m excited about the tour - also excited about the gift shop!

Pearzee , It is beautiful crystal, and far less expensive than buying it in Prague. If you purchase, they will pack it well so that it won't break while traveling.

What a perfect time of year to be in Prague! There is so much to do in and around Prague and a month will let you see it in a nice, relaxed way. My mother is from Prague so I'm lucky to get to go back regularly to see family and explore beyond the main sights (but I always make time for a visit to the castle grounds and Petřín Hill).

For side trips, Karlštejn Castle, Kutná Hora, and Konopiště are all popular and easy day trips from Prague. I personally love Bohemian Paradise and there are some tour operators than offer day trips. Like others here, I'd recommend an overnight if you want to go further away to Český Krumlov or one of the western Bohemian spa towns. Dresden is also a great overnight destination but too long for an enjoyable day trip.

Within Prague, my favourite things beyond the main tourist sights/activities are:
- Walking around Vyšehrad (especially perfect on an autumn day)
- Eating lots and lots of chlebíčky (traditionally, Czechs eat large, hot lunches but light, often cold dinners - chlebíčky are perfect for this though are usually more of a party food. I don't care. No one will make them for me in Vancouver but they are everywhere in Prague and even the grocery store versions are good.)
- Exploring Divoká Šárka, a park in the city's NW
- Listening to the bells at Loreta
- Watching school children huddle under the singing fountain in the royal gardens (and then crouching under it myself)
- Exploring Czech art at the Trade Fair Palace branch of the National Gallery
- Going to an opera at the Estates Theatre and a concert at Obecní dům
- Attending concerts by music students

You'll be there for St Wenceslas day at the end of September so will have a chance to celebrate the holiday! There are celebrations both in Prague and around the country.

I spent a week in Prague in October, and I could have spent much more time there. There is so much to do in Prague, and there are so many cultures in which to participate: art, music, cafe, food, etc. It's quite a lovely place. I packed a lot into my week in Prague; it would have been nice to move at a slower pace. Here's what I did with my time there: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/eight-days-in-prague-in-october-a-solo-traveller-s-trip-report

I would highly suggest watching some of the Honest Guide's videos on YouTube, if you have not already found them. The channel has been doing a lot of "scam busting" lately, but there is a wealth of videos about non-touristy Prague and Czech Republic activities. https://www.youtube.com/c/HONESTGUIDE

If I had a month, I would think about maybe splitting time between Prague and Brno/Olomouc. Brno is a university town. It gets you close to the location of Mucha's Slav Epic, which I think would be a really nice thing to see while in the Czech Republic. Lots of nature. Lots of classical music. Moravian Autumn, a Moravian classical music festival, would fall toward the end of your planned trip. Here is the 2025 schedule (which will likely become the 2026 schedule whenever it is ready): https://filharmonie-brno.cz/en/moravian-autumn/

The biennial Janáček Festival in Brno (opera and classical music) also starts in mid October this year and offers a wide assortment of performances, too. https://janacek-brno.cz/en/

I wanted to split time between Prague and Brno over about 3 weeks last October, but family obligations disrupted that plan. I aim to return to the Czech Republic, spending about 10 days in the Brno region, this October.
