Shoutout to Rovinj

I can unreservedly recommend Restoran Santa Croce in Rovinj, where we ate two out of four nights on our recent stay there. Reservations are important, but both food, service and value are outstanding.
We also enjoyed a dinner at Bookeria, also featuring very personable service and good food. Seafood is king in this area and if you like fish you will eat very well.

We stayed at the Meleran, which is youthful in spirit (terrific young staff), but can require climbing stairs unless you specify a lower floor (we had one outside flight which was manageable; we’re 72 and 75). Transport by golf cart is offered between a somewhat distant private parking area (10 min walk) and breakfast is offered at a nearby cafe (decent although not memorable).

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Rovinj, although there’s not terribly much to do there except relax and enjoy the beautiful waterfront . We did drive to Pula one day to see the impressive Roman arena (parking was difficult even in late April), had a fabulous olive oil tasting at Chiavalon (HIGHLY recommend), and spent a day checking out nearby mountain villages (Motovun was extremely disappointing and I’d skip it - extremely steep to access by foot and little of interest in the Old Town once you reach it).

I concur about Restoran Santa Croce. In October 2024, I had a seafood dinner there: It was delicious.

I loved Rovinj overall: The atmosphere is enchanting. It was a great place to "vacation from your vacation." Croatia was one of six Central European countries I had visited. Rovinj was perfect for mostly lounging, though the town with its nooks and crannies is culturally rich. I encourage visitors to climb the bell tower of the Church of St. Euphemia. You'll be rewarded with stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the region.

Elizabeth, thank you for these recommendations! I am interested in knowing more about the Chiavalon olive oil tasting. Where did you hear about it, what did it include, how much time did you spend, and what was the approximate cost?

Happy Traveler,
Regarding Chiavalon, I think I initially learned about it from an online forum post (either here or on either the fodors or TA forum).

We spent probably 2 hours there and I recall the cost was 30 or 35 euros per person, which we thought was a steal considering they served each couple an enormous charcuterie board, basket of bread and an entire bottle of wine. We hadn’t had lunch & this more than compensated!
Prior to this “snack” as they called it, we had a most entertaining tutorial by a charismatic employee who helped us taste and discern various oils, and taught us about the history and process of the Chiavalon company and olive oil production in general.
They have an on-site store where we bought olive oil to bring home; also lovely grounds with play equipment for kids and chairs in which to relax. It was a great way to learn more about Croatian culture too as our guide was extremely personable.
I hope this answers your questions. For us it was a highlight of our stay.
