Very impressed with Binax now proctored antigen test. Review

I leave on a cruise in two days. Passengers are required to be vaccinated and have a negative covid test within 2 days of the cruise start. This proctored test had been recommended by both the cruise line and this forum for being inexpensive (around $30), easy, and quick. I knew I could probably get a test from a pharmacy but they do not send results for a day or two in my area.

The process was quite straightforward. You sign into the website, show the proctor ID, and then open the test and proceed under the direction of the test proctor. I was assigned a proctor within 2 minutes of signing in and the steps of showing ID, doing nasal swab, and inserting it into the test card took about 5 minutes. A timer was then set for 15 minutes and the test card must be visible to the proctor without being touched during that time. Reading the test result was about 1 minute, and 1 minute later the test result was emailed to me from the lab and a QR code made on the Navica App.

I was pleased with how quick, convenient, and reasonably priced this test was. I didn’t worry about testing appointments being cancelled by the provider (this has happened to me twice before) or how long it would take to get the report of test results. I’ll be bringing this on my trip to Spain in December.

Now, off to Alaska…….

We were very happy also with the ease of testing, using the test is Switzerland for return to the US
. Were you able to buy just one kit? We had to order on line, with overnight delivery, and had to buy a six-test package, altho extras aren't a bad thing.
Safe travels!

Thank you! I had not yet heard about this test. We are signed up for a 2022 RS tour and if COVID testing is still required we will definitely go this route. Maybe Rick will have tests available through his travel store. Not a bad idea 😉

Pat, there was a choice of a two pack, three pack, or 6 pack. I went ahead and bought the six pack since I knew I had this cruise and that my sister and I were headed to Spain in December.

Interestingly, having that extra test paid off here at home. My granddaughter came down with a cold and was excluded from school for 10 days or until she had a confirmed negative Covid test. (not complaining about this policy- I'm all for extra caution in the schools). The challenge was that it was 3 days until my daughter could schedule a Covid test and then it was going to be 2-3 days until the results were back. She had already missed a week of school. I pulled out one of the extra tests, and now my Covid negative granddaughter is back to school. My daughter has ordered a two-pack for the future......

Carol now retired (and others): where did you get your Binaxnow tests? I did look online and all the pharmacies around me are out of stock.

Don't buy the tests too far in advance. Ours were purchased mid-August, 2021, and expire Oct 15, 2021. I have read that the newer ones might have a longer expiration date.s
Safe travels!

Pat, you will be happy to know that these tests are now approved with a new expiration date, which is 1 year from the date of manufacture. Your tests won’t really expire until 3/2022.

Carol, is the date of manufacture clearly posted? I'll have to dig them out.
Thx so much!

Just adding to the great reviews: my daughter and I used these tests for our return from Paris to the US in Sept. They worked great and were super convenient. (We were out late and did our tests at 12am on a Thurs for a Sat am departure). No problems. If you want to see how they work there's a great review on The Points Guy where he illustrates signing on and testing step by step. It helped my father and step-mother a lot (they used the tests coming back to US from Finland) as they can be intimidated by the technology.
We also ordered the 6 pack and have found the "extra" tests are very useful, though now with the longer expiration dates we hope to be back abroad again within the year!

I agree! We used these in August when we were in Iceland and needed the test to return to the US. I have since read that Iceland accepts theses tests for arrival as well.

We took extra kits just in case, and that was a good call. In my test kit, the dropper was empty, but we didn't need to open another kit as the proctor said it was ok to use the dropper from my husbands kit. I think it was around July that the wait for a proctor was insane but they have since fixed that and we had no wait at all and there were 5 of us, so we had to log on 5 times.

We are also headed to Costa Rica and back to Iceland this winter, so will use these kits again.

Carol, have fun in Alaska! We just got back. We were in Iceland for 2 weeks, home for 9 days, and then in Alaska for 2 weeks. We did see the northern lights own our first night in Alaska!

Oh BTW Carol, UW does popup testing sights and the results are within 24 hours. We did this for when we left for Iceland and it was really easy. We went to the one in Ballard.

Hi Carol, I've been told that you can't use a cell phone to do the video call with these and must carry a laptop. Curious if you had the same problem with using a cell phone? I don't really want to have to carry my laptop around with me on my trip to Italy next month if it is not needed. Thanks!

Just adding that you have to get the tests directly from the manufacturer, Abbott. They’re not available any other way. I’m carrying 3 kits thru Italy right now, for eventual testing before flying back to the U.S. later this month. Enjoy Alaska!

klathomp, Your cell phone works for the test. We bought the 6-test kit, and used two before we left home, monitored and with our cell phone because it was our only internet device we were taking.
It's a little awkward holding the cell phone in one hand, and pointing the camera to the area requested, so in Switzerland, we held the phone for each other rather than taking the test simultaneously.
