Travel insurance that with high quarantine hotel coverage if needed? Can I buy 2 insurances?

Hi all,

I am booking my honeymoon to the Maldives where resorts can cost $1k-$3k per night. If we were to test positive and require to quarantine for 7 or 10 days, we would have to pay an additional $10k to $40k depending on single or double occupancy and availability of rooms.

Are there any travel insurances that can help cover most of this? As I understand it, the coverage comes from the trip delay portion which average policies cover $100/200 a day for a max of $2k-3k which is a minimal amount.

Am I able to buy multiple insurances for the same trip to maximize that if needed?

Thank you very much for the advice.

Doesn't quite get you to the coverage amounts you need (no cheaper options?) but I know with the travel insurance I had through Trawick, each traveler has their own deductibles, coverages, and coverage limits. So if you were to have 2 people traveling and paid a slightly higher premium for the optional upgraded $400/day trip delay coverage that'd actually get ya to $800/day. Of course, keep in mind this is reimbursement - so you'd need the money (or available credit) to handle things yourself before then submitting reimbursement claims to insurance.

Are there no acceptable alternative accommodations likely to have openings that you could move to, if you needed to quarantine? I'm not at all familiar with the Maldives and realize the resorts may be in rather isolated locations.

Thank you both.

Yes Trawick definitely has the highest coverage that hopefully will cover half of our quarantine. Do you have any experience with this company? I’m still waiting for them to payout a trip cancellation claim (husband got covid) and it’s been 4 weeks so far.

The option for us is to be transferred to a cheaper resort that costs $1k per night that we can shoulder if needed. This is only if there is availability at that sister resort though. There are a lot of ifs and this trip does have me worried. Max we would have to pay out is about $50k if we stayed at our resort.

If you look at multiple policies as a way to increase your coverage, be sure to research and understand their "Other Coverage" and 'Primary vs, Secondary' clauses.

The safer way to go may be to buy one policy that has higher levels of coverage.

Be careful. Some of what you are suggesting borders on insurance fraud. And that will cancel everything. You can only insure potential loss. If your loss will be $1000, you cannot insure it for $2000 and collect $2000. What you can do is to read the fine print several times. There should be policies available that would cover your potential loss. There is nothing generic about travel insurance. Each policy is different as to coverage and procedures. For a premium policy expect to pay about 10% of your insured risk. And --- assume nothing if it is not in writing. Many policies are precluding covid related claims.

So I’m not trying to collect additional money more than my loss.

The maximum trip delay I can find is $7k per person which is what covers quarantine hotel costs.

My potential payment if I cannot transfer to the cheaper sister resort due to availability is $40k

I’m trying to buy another policy that offers $3k trip delay for a total of $10k per person.

If my quarantine hotel pricing is less than 10k per person I will only claim the exact amount I had to pay to the resort.

Does this make sense?

It makes sense. But based on my years working with insurance it’s not going to work

I believe it is very much like healthcare insurance. And there’s a cap. So if the cap on policy one is $1000 day and the cap on policy two is $1200 when you submit your claim they want to know. what have you been reimbursed from other sources. So yiu write $1000 day from insurance one. At that point they’re going to give you $200 a day. Not another $1200, regardless of what you’re out of cost expenses were. If you don’t tell them that you were already expecting the other insurance and they find out everything is invalid and you won’t get paid anything

Honestly, this is a vacation I would consider moving to another time. If you can’t afford the cost to quarantine and there are no affordable alternatives anywhere around then this might not be the time to go where you’re planning to go

Have you spoken to the resort about this also? I say that because resorts in other parts of world have come up with some creative ways to handle this. I know of some that charge you a couple of hundred dollars for an insurance policy and if you test positive the insurance policy their kicks and they put you up someplace. they may have a plan that you might find more fordable than your insurance scheme

Booking.com has highly rated (9.4) hotel rooms in the Maldives as low as $50/night.

Thank you Carol this is very helpful.

You might be right that it is better to delay. Heartbroken since we saved up to go this luxury resort and this has been delayed 3 years. But it is definitely better than worrying about it.
