Train travel in Italy post Covid?

We (70+ couple) planned to join RS Best of Italy this September 2021. But that seems unlikely. So we are working on an independent traveler itinerary. We have found hotel bookings generous with "free cancellation" policies up to a couple weeks ahead of travel. Most important to our plans would be the availability of fairly normal train travel within Italy (Milan, Venice, CT, Naples, Rome and so on.) We are experienced train travelers there, having learned from our previous RS tours and on our own. But recently when we try to research it is not surprising that schedules for the fall are unknown at this time. Any words of wisdom and encouragement would be appreciated, thanks.

Its only just within 120 days window? - I'd say you're a little early. And do you really want to be booking cheap NON FEFUNDABLE tickets this far in advance? There will always be seats on those main routes. I'd wait a bit and see whole things pan out in Europe and particularly when Americans can travel there again.

I assume you are familiar with https://www.seat61.com/train-travel-in-italy.htm

Thanks to tdw and Llssie. We used to look at train schedules on DB navigate. We will not book very far ahead, just buy a few days in advance or even at the station. I was just worried that trains would be running as usual.

We had not considered that passenger numbers on trains might be limited. Good to consider and keep researching.

I am in Italy for business. Trains are running normally. Masks (and usually social distancing) are in place. At major stations they are checking to be sure that you are not going to a Covid-restricted region. There is still a quarantine in place for international visitors unless you are on a Delta or Alitalia Covid-tested flight with strict rules.

Glad to hear trains are running. We have no problem wearing masks, etc. We are fully vaccinated, but will wait and see if non essential travel is approved before totally decide. thanks!
