Protecting CDC cards?

I have a question to present to this creative and inventive group:

I want to protect my CDC card. I ordered waterproof plastic holders from Amazon. BUT- sometimes printed material, when enclosed in plastic, seals/adheres to the plastic, and is essentially ruined when removed. How can I prevent this from happening? I thought sprinkling some talcum powder might help, but I know with the wealth of expertise on The Forum, someone will have the PERFECT solution.

Thanks and safe travels!

I put mine in the plastic sleeve that already contains my Yellow international vaccination card approved by WHO and that is in my neck wallet that has my passport. Everything is in the same place. I leave for Venice tomorrow.

Do you have this vaccination card?

Hi Pat,
Our cards are also in plastic holders. I can't help you with ideas to make sure the print doesn't adhere to the plastic, but maybe just make sure that the cards don't have "wiggle room" in the case and so even if the print did stick, it would still be readable.
Someone on this forum mentioned that their vaccine info was on My Chart, so hubby went to check yesterday. Info was there, so that's a relief to know we can access that info if cards get damaged or lost.

Excellent question. I don’t have the “perfect solution yet.” That said I have temporarily placed my card in a recipe card sleeve, small ziplock bag in my passport. Currently not traveling. When needed for travel and future indoor requirements, I will probably use the plastic holders from Amazon for lanyard or use a neck wallet. Perhaps the “perfect solution will
come.” In the meantime their are a plethora of
products on the market!

Pat I bought sheets of acid free, translucent kraft paper at an art supply store but the they also have it at Michael’s. I just cut it to size and slipped in in front and back of the CDC card. So far, a friend who recently travelled and had to show his CDC card said the agent could read his card ok through the plastic holder (conference badge type) with translucent paper.

I'm thinking I'm going to put rice in the plastic card holder now to make it less sticky- rice does an amazing job on wet I-Phones, so why not? [ I think I am loosing it from all this travel chaos.]

Thx for all your suggestions!

Take a close-up photo with your phone of your CDC card.
If your card is damaged, destroyed or goes missing, you can access this photo.
It's better than having nothing at all to show.

I am with you Pat. Such craziness isn’t it!? These flimsy CDC vacc cards are like my flimsy Medicare card. At least the latter gets replaced now and then. This vacc card feels like a valuable, vulnerable and fragile document that we need to guard with our lives! We have it saved on our phones…but our trip in Oct to Europe will demand actual card gets some use! I like some of the products I saw on Etsy etc? Nothing purchased yet.

We ordered the same waterproof ones on Amazon, I am just going to put a piece of paper in front of the card in the holder. When I need the CDC card exposed I will just move the paper to the back of the card then re-cover. I am not anticipating having to present it that often, but you never know. I will need to have it for a concert we are attending next month.

Perhaps use the desiccant packet from a medicine/vitamin bottle?. Not sure I would want loose rice or powder in the holder.

As already mentioned, my 1st thought was just protect it with a blank sheet of paper.

Mona's idea of translucent acid-free paper sounds worth trying. I ordered the plastic holders from Amazon also. I really hadn't considered ink transfer. Thanks for posting the question Pat.

I have a clear holder for both my CDC card and my passport that can hang around my neck with a lanyard. I'm thinking of wrapping the CDC card in cling film to prefent moisture. Or perhaps a ziploc bag. I put my cash in a ziploc bag before it goes in my moneybelt to prevent it from excess humidity.

Thoughts?

As a librarian who had a class on preserving documents I am always concerned about print coming into contact with plastic, glass and other surfaces so I’m still sticking with my recommendation of acid-free paper, preferably translucent. I hadn’t considered the humidity problem but with the kind of “badge protectors” you first recommended, Frank, they seal really well so I hope it won’t be a problem. I’ve been carrying my CDC card in my crossbody purse so it’s not up against my body.
