Proof of Vaccination for Canadians?

Hi all,

So now that I'm fully vaccinated and Europe seems to be opening up again, as well as Canadian restrictions easing up somewhat as of July 5, I'm chomping at the bit to get travelling again! I'm considering 2 weeks in Greece as early as this September, given that country is open to Canadians and doesn't seem to have onerous entry requirements. However my concern is this: what will pass as appropriate proof of vaccination?

Americans can show their CDC card, Brits can show their NHS card, but as of yet, there is no national "vaccine passport" for Canadians. All I have are my receipts from my provincial Ministry of Health showing dates, times, type of vaccine, etc. I have been searching in vain for any kind of confirmation that this would pass for sufficient proof of vaccination, but can't find anything so far. The Greek tourism website is somewhat ambiguous in it's wording. On the one hand it states tourists can show proof of vaccination from their "national authority" (which of course, we don't have yet) but then later on it says "certified authority" (which a provincial health ministry would certainly be).

I'm thinking perhaps maybe I should just wait until spring of 2022 when hopefully things should be much clearer, and one would hope, we might finally have some kind of official vaccine passport. Either that, or just get a PCR test before leaving and use that instead, despite being fully vaccinated.

Just wondering if any fellow Canadians have any experience with this or further thoughts.

Maybe I am too trusting, but I am expecting my Ontario issue receipt to be adequate. Granted, I also asked them to add it to my vaccination 'bible'...my yellow international travel card. It would be easier to fake the yellow card entry than our receipts, btw. Did they also email it to you? If so, I would also keep that handy on my smart phone to verify receipt...of the receipt....from a government department.
Did you read Frank II's post of today? It is the logical big picture...that EU knows not all countries will have digital options and they don't really want to lose your tourist dollars.
My thoughts are that the first Canadian at immigration may have documents reviewed carefully (with knots in their stomach) but give it a few weeks and things will be easier.
Countries are already accepting US paper vaccine receipts, so I don't see it being that different for Canadians. By September, all will know what Canadians are using as proof.
I am also considering travel to Europe in the Fall. My deciding factor are the required tests rather than proof of vaccination.
If I read it right, Canadians still need to have a negative test before departure anyway, in which case you will have your neg PCR test as well as vaccine. Coming home, the vaccine receipts mean a whole lot more for ease of return...no mandatory hotel stay.

Thanks for the reply Maria. Yes, I have been certain to keep the email confirms. Also, I have downloaded the receipts with the Ontario Ministry of Health watermark on them from the provincial site.

Yes, it is my hope that over the next month or so things will become much clearer as to what is required from Canadians. You would think some will have taken the plunge, certainly by the end of August. I'm not worried so much about returning as the steps are clearly outlined on ArriveCAN. Just not sure I want to be a "guinea pig" only to find out the receipts wouldn't be accepted. But I'm hoping there will be more clarification over the summer.

GregW, not sure where we can lurk, but I expect there will be Canadians leaving any day now. There are bound to be reports soon. But I totally get the not wanting to be a guinea pig.

Happy Canada Day!!

Has anybody tried calling Air Canada and asking them? They might know because if they let you fly and you're turned back they have to bring you back and pay a fine....

Thanks Nigel!

Yes, that's definitely another consideration. You'd think you wouldn't be permitted to board the flight unless you had proper credentials anyway, so definitely worth asking AC about it.

GregW,

Yes, none of my business, but I'd be happy to visit Canada, my favorite foreign country, if I could.

. . . Americans can show their CDC card, . . . All I have are my receipts from my provincial Ministry of Health showing dates, times, type of vaccine, etc.

But you see, our US CDC cards are just pieces of paper with the same information you describe, often handwritten, and you usually have to enter your own name and address. So there is no coded link to any kind of verifiable record or to a national authority, and thats what all the noise is about down here. It seems that they're being accepted as proof for us for now, for entry to many countries.

Hi Stan,

Thanks for your input. I think that's what my angst (and perhaps that of other Canadians) is about though. We know the CDC cards are being accepted as sufficient proof of vaccinations. I haven't heard yet from other Canadians who have travelled who can confirm our sub-national documentation will be enough. One would hope so since at this point, that is all we have.
